Do Japanese people think kanji is important to their culture?

60 years ago, some people in Japan wanted to stop using kanji. They wanted to only use romaji.
 
They are still using a lot of kanji now and I'm having a hard time remembering each of the first 120 characters expected of me in Nihongo I.
