...accident within the year? I keep hearing that if I was involved in an accident within the year and my license is expiring, I have to retake the written test to get my license renewed. ohh in california by the way.

No, not one bit. Unless there's certain circumstances involved. Such as you lost your license and that's why you have to renew it. Or if maybe you're on only a learner's permit.

But otherwise, just because you had an accident does not involve whether you have to take a test over again. An accident mostly involves the insurance company. Unless your accident had you driving thru an open crowd, mowing down people all over and then crashing into a mall. THEN. . . .it might be a problem, because then you might have earned enough points taken off your license to lose it. Then again, it's moreso because of losing the license, not just having an accident. I woudn't worry about it.

No,

Unless you are an old person and your accident is killing someone because you step on the gas paddle instead of the brake, thinking the gas paddle is the brake paddle.

Even then, you will not have to take the written test.
