"DIY MODS" and TRICKS to SAVE $$$$$$

I never been a "Fan" of duel exhaust on a "bagger" so I yanked the head pipe off ... did a Lil trimming and welding...and here's the finished product...( I phone camera a little blurry)

After doing some research on improving my headlights, I bought a HID Xenon Hi/Lo kit from Motorcycle Metal. Since I have a lot of room under the fairing I got the large ballasts which I figure would be better in the long run.

The instructions were OK and the kit was plug and play, no mods required unless you follow the recommendation to add a switch. I was going to use the ACC switch but didn't have enough time or info to do that now. That will be a winter project.

The mounting screws for the radio make great mounting points for the grounds and ballasts.

We used a clothes hangar very carefully to fish the power cable back to the battery and had to remove a piece of the plastic battery cover for clearance since there is one more connection on the positive terminal.

I added a lock washer to the ballast mounting screw, put a 2" piece of weatherstripping between the radio bracket and rear of the ballast to keep it from hitting there and used lots of tie-wraps to keep everything in place.

It took me and a buddy 3 hrs, including a break for lunch and half of that time was removing and reinstalling the fairing which I did for the first time.

If my camera works OK I'll try to get a picture of how they look at night.

If anyone has figured out how to use the ACC switch for this please send me a PM.

I thought I sent you a wiring diagram to show you how to use any switch for an intruptor switch. Lee, will send you one now, look in your e-Mail. These are not just big ballasts but they are super digital which are not analog but digital. They are very accurate and will last 2X as long as the standard digital type. These are military grade.

Thanks for the wiring diagram, I must have misplaced the original one you sent me. Those ballasts seemed extra heavy duty, now I know why. Everything looks like its built for a lifetime, the old addage you get what you pay for is obvious in your HID kit.
It was also nice to get you on the phone on Saturday when I had a clarifying question. That doesn't happen with any other vendor!

harley sells saddlegab filler strips for 169.00, but i just bent some sheet metal to the same shape as the harley ones and spray painted it with high temp bbq paint. the black bbq paint matches the leather wraped bags perfectly and it cost less than $10. all u need is tin snips and something to bend the sheet metal with.

I have a 2009 rkc and i want to move the license plate under the tail light but i cant find anything i like too cover the holes from the original mounting bracket. I was thinking of just sticking an bar and shield medalion over the holes but im not sure how well that will stick because of the curve of the fender. Any ideas?

Even easier and cheaper, I used a piece of PVC U shaped gutter (cost: $4.00 at Menard's), a heat gun and jig saw. I used most of the 10 or 12 foot length experimenting with prototypes, and still had a couple feet left over after making the final fillers. Since my Road Glide is orange with a black stripe, I used a gloss black spray paint and used several coats of clear on top. You can see photos at: picasaweb.google.com/bikerdaddy.
