I've just watched "Alive in Joburg" which is the short film that District 9 is based on.

Sharlto Copley who plays Wikus in District 9 is also in Alive in Joburg . . . and he was also one of the producers too. Looks a bit different in Alive though . . . a little bit more military-like!
Anyway . . . I loved District 9 and the way that you had to piece together your own reasons and thoughts as to why they were there and what happened to Wikus in the end . . . it was very thought provoking and I found myself getting very emotional towarRAB the end of the film. 9/10 for me!

Great movie...but the only thing that was a slight pothole was the fact that the ship had been there for 20 years yet the humans hadn't deactivated it or anything to make sure it didn't fly away.
The ending was quite sad though , when he was just stood there making the paper flower

Lol..OMG I'm glad I'm not the only person to notice that. I found it really distracting for a while and kept thinking is it geordie or scouse
It was weird because it made the whole sentance that he said f word in sound geordie also.
Aside from that I loved this film and would recommend it and I agree I hope they don't get a huge budget if/when they make a sequel as it would ruin it imo

interesting observation: I thought it was entirely deliberate that, given he was married to the daughter of a mnu director/big shot, he had secured this out of nepotism by assoication and that, take away the, armed troops with him and he was somewhat out of depth anyway and somewhat childlike and overearnest
I though that was partly the point of the film
how the experience of being a refugee of sorts as he ahem, well you know, meant he was forced to strenghten on many levels and not just the superficial physical strength he aqquired
in that found the hero of sorts and had the balls, to act on, what he hinted, at in the beginning he, found a little dodgy
because despite being the officious voice of mnu, I would argue he did not entirely agree with all of it

Maybe I was expecting a bit too much, but I really didn't like it.
For some reason it felt like they were making it up as they went along.

I heard someone else mention sequels with this film which brings me to make this point.
Why can't we have a few good open and shut Sci-Fi films every so often without the need for inconclusive storylines which can be sometimes extremely irratating.
District 10,11,12,13 and 14 are now being filmed and a TV show and cartoon will be ready in 2 years...

So far this year this is my favorite film I have seen.
I would go as far as to say it is up there as my all time favorite films.
It is very clever, very different and really really emotionally brilliant. I loved every second of it and found myself really warming to the alien things.
Really REALLY good film. Brilliant.

There is only a 15 rated version. BBFC passed it as a 15 uncut.
Got dragged along to see this last night. Over the last few years - have rarely made it through a whole movie - usually end up in the car park or the bar after the first half hour! Not a great movie buff. This last time - only had a ten minute ciggie break before going back in.
Would rate it as 25% great - 50% ok and 25% rubbish. Some great acting and camera work. Enjoyed the documentary theme - but not followed through. Location shots of the Jo slums - great. Far too many answered questions, felt the director lost nerve half way through. Especially when the cute little child alien saved the day - plus the transformer shoot out. Muddled, noisy and unconvincing animation. Far too dependant on other films visually. To summarise - could have been epic, but lost the plot. Sub titles were crazy...humans speaking in English - prawns in prawnese - but apparently they all understood each other! Understand the film has been banned in Nigeria - and can see why.

I felt he had been promoted beyond his ability and was a fish out of water when it came to ordering the soldiers around. That level of power was new to him, and he had a child-like delight in being the focus of the documentaries.
However, I also felt that he was a lot more confident and assured when he was on the ground talking to the prawns. There he was in his element; he knew was good at his job and I don't think you could take that kind of knowledge/power away from him. Admittedly even there he tended to avoid conflict. He was a weak man who tended to take the easy way out. He knew the relocation wouldn't benefit the prawns, but he didn't care.
He's certainly an interesting character. Sometimes we feel we ought to like the protagonist, because we're so used to Hollywood heroes. I don't think the film neeRAB this one to be likeable.

I didnt think the movie was all that. I liked seeing the aliens in the slums but that was about it, it lacked a good story line for me. I wonder if there will be a sequel because I would like to see if that guy comes back in 3 years like he said he would and prehaps they could show the Aliens home planet and why they came to Earth in the first place.

I thought that this was a really good film, I can't wait for it to come out on Bluray 
They didn't understand the alien technology and it wouldn't work for them anyway. If they had managed to switch it off, it would probably have dropped and flattened Jo'burgh. It didn't seem to be going anywhere. Whatever they did do was probably secret and just not featured in the film. From what we saw, most of their efforts were focussed on the aliens and their weapons.

Really enjoyed it, and I'm sucker for movies with bitter-sweet endings.
I hope there isn't a sequel, and they leave it as it is, leaving the viewers to their imagination.
I loved the lack of an American accents, all for more major releases being filmed elsewhere!

I loved this movie....and I'm not usually I sci-fi buff.
I thought it was extraordinary in every sense of the word.
I watched it with my daughter...and we were both laughing at the beginning thinking it was some kind of send up comedy. However by the end of it, we were both quite tearful and emotional. And I'm not a teary or emotional person at movies.
This film was very thought provoking as both my daughter and I chatted about it loaRAB afterwarRAB.
But that said and after all my hyping it up, my hubby watched it the next night and said that he switched it off before the end as he found it to be the biggest yawnfest and load of tripe he'd ever had to endure for quite some time.
So there you go.....two opinions on this one.
