District 9 Wow!

IMO it was one of the best films I'd seen in 2009. I felt sympathy for the main character AND the aliens and the story is deeper than your average blockbuster.

But don't you think that was supposed to be the point? It was a classic anti-hero scenario, an ordinary person, an 'everyman' thrust into extraordinary events.

I thought he was excellent, the later scenes where he starts to change, and suffers both a physical and mental breakdown were very powerful.
 
I thought the start was like a comedy, like a spoof documentary or something, thankfully it wasnt all like that. It was funny at the start but I dont think I'd like a whole film like that.
 
Just finished watching the DVD. Wow. I'm stunned - best ScFi I have seen for a very long time.

Of now to watch the DVD extras.

Destined to become a classic.
 
Me too, I have to say, I also chuckled no end at the man's ineptitude at the beginning of the film, he was a bit like a South African version of David Brent.

I just loved everything about this film, they just took a genre and turned it on it's head, it was refreshingly original, well made and entertaining. A definite future cult classic.
 
Spot on, that's what I liked about the film. It would have been absolutely tedious if we'd had to endure another Christian Bale type flexing his muscles and saving the day with his chiseled jaw. I liked how the main protagonists (both the SA guy and Christopher the chief prawn) were both flawed individuals.
Also I thought it was an excellent take on SA's history of apartheid.
 
You seem to have missed this exchange, just before he knocks him out.

Wikus: I'll just stay here, Christopher. Huh? I'll just stay in this shack. And I'll see you in three years time, eh?
Christopher: I will come back. I promise.

The fact that it would take three years - whether that meant leaving him and then returning or taking him along and then bringing him back - was reason enough to frustrate him. The point is that, as "liberal" as he is, he still thinks that saving himself is more important than saying all the Prawns.
 
For me, this was definately one of the best films of 2009. I liked how I really hated the main character at the start but once he started to transform I found him much easier to identify with. I also like the underlying social commentary, even if, at times, it was made perhaps a little too obvious.
 
Just saw this last night, and it absolutely blew me away. I'd read some negative reviews which kinda got me ready for a disappointment, but thankfully it wasn't to be.

I loved how the movie switched from the documentary style to buddy sci fi and then something quite deeper so seamlessly. At first I thought the film was going to be quite heavy handed in the politics with race and separation etc, but it turned out quite differently. In the end, to me it seemed to be more of a comment on the hopeless self destructive nature of the human race, and the dangers of the profit-first world. When someone like Wikus could become quite a different character though, I found that to be rather hopeful.

A tremendous movie. I hope they don't do a sequel, as this one is so good on it's own, but sadly it's inevitable.
 
You make some great points, but I think there neeRAB to be a District 10 as District 9 was left open ended.

If they do do a District 10, I hope it does the original film justic, because as you say, D9 is superb.
 
I recently watched this and enjoyed it. It was very slow to start, but then it got really good.

The only thing I disliked what the accent. The South Africa English "Afrikaans" accent is horrible, especially the way the main character says "f*ck".
 
I hope they don't do a sequel. It is best as a standalone film. 2009 was a good year for intelligent sci fi what with District 9 and Moon. I hope the director on District 9(Neill Blomkamp) goes on to do more films.
 
I watched this on Saturday and I've never seen any hype on it. I kept seeing it on the stand at argos and passing it by, it didn't look like something I'd enjoy.

For the first half hour I was like 'what the hell am I watching here' but I like to finish a film once I've started no matter how crap and then have a giggle after (only one I couldn't was 44 inch chest). I'm so glad, this has turned out to be one of the most addictive films I've ever seen.

I hardly ever watch a film twice even if I thought it was the bees knees. I've watched this 4 times now already and still seen something I missed the last 3 times :p I fell in love with Wikus by the time it got to the end and I've annoyed everyone with my shit SA accent because I can't get it out of my head.... that's seriously annoying let me tell you.

Just goes to show you don't need a top name actor or over the top budget for a film to make an impact on you. I might watch it again later :D
 
I thought District 9 was very disappointing, especially considering this was an alien race that would have likely been far superior to us, and therefore, would have been able to make mincemeat of us.
