District 9 Wow!

Main guy is SUPPOSED to be a dick... that's kind of the point. He's actually supposed to be an absolute bastard. He's the kind of guy who was in charge of real district clearances under apartheid, but could still think he was a nice bumbling guy who could go back to his family after committing such atrocities. Whether you think his redemption works is the question, really- the fact that he's a dick who's prepared to massacre family homes (it's all part of the analogy, natch) who then discovers common ground with those he's seen as subhuman is the entire story.

I thought it was great. Then the mecha bit happened, and I thought it was AWESOME.

My only problem was that the analogy was a little too obvious, but that's not really a problem when you make a decent movie out of it.

Yea....and how the hell did he manage to bag a drop dead gorgeous wife:confused:....but I agree with your post.He just annoyed me from the off....In reality there`s no way in a million years they`d had given him the Job of clearing the aliens.....He annoyed me so much I`d have wanted to shoot him myself.

I suspect some people expected an ending more like Avatar, with
the hero happier as an alien than as a human. In Avatar, he more than fits in and gets accepted by them, he becomes a kind of military leader. He's better at being Na'vi than the Na'vi are. And he saves them from oppression, so he gets to have his cake and eat it: he salves his (America's) conscience about the oppression without the inconvenience of having to live with it.

In District 9, although the main character plays a pivotal role in Christopher escaping, it's Christopher who is the real hero. The main guy enRAB up in a bad way, longing to be human again and sending gifts to his wife, but unable to change back. He doesn't fall in love with an alien and have shrimp babies. He doesn't even have someone he can talk to once Christopher has gone. It's not a happy ending for him.
This makes District 9 a different kind of film from Avatar, despite the superficial similarity in plots. And there's some evidence that Avatar is the version with the most crowd-appeal.

District 9 was my favourite film of 2009.

I'm also shocked that it was a low budget film, yet it was so well acted & crafted.

Just goes to show that you don't always need Hollywood & multi million dollar budgets to make a great film.

Spoilered, just in case anyone hasn't seen the film.

It was very clear that his promotion was due to his connection to the boss. Plus, trying to get aliens to sign (illegal) eviction forms wasn't exactly a glamorous job.

He was a very sympathetic character, up until he cracked Christopher over the head and tried to nick his spaceship.

Avatar, Moon and District 9 were probably in my top 5 for the year I would say.

I couldn't really compare them all to say which is best, totally different movies.

I thought for a blockbuster that had to appeal to a wider audience, Avatar did an incredible job. It had a bit of everything.

It's weird, I've seen Avatar, Moon and District 9 mentioned more than anything else in terms of best movies of the year. But I wasn't overly keen on any of them. I almost feel like I've missed something! :p

I think your on something, It looked soo like a good alien movie, and i seen it and i thought it was so so silly and basicly a immature film. Really badly written. I thought it was worst movie ever, i turned it off after about a hour was sooo boring.

Yeah it is quite a good film. The main character starts off as a wally, and then finishes off as quite a sympathetic character. An unusual film. Got to love the CGI prawns in it!

I like Moon as well. I suppose they are both thinking sci fi films. I haven't seen Avatar - yet.

Thought it was superb !! Loved it after abiout 2 minutes and it kept my attention till the end. Have it as 2nd behind Inglorious and ahead of Up as my fave oscar films.

Didnt care for that Nigeria stuff considering that was where I was from. Didnt offend me though I just shook my head, although I did think that Inter Species prostitution was a little bit naughty

I know...

What a prick....his salvation lies in the hanRAB of the Alien and he knocks him out.....why?...have I missed something:confused:....The only thing I can think of was that the alien was going to leave him behind....but if this was the case the dialog did`t make this scenario clear.....The alien just said it would take 3yrs....Not "Ill be back in 3yrs....although after the shoot out the alien made it clear he`d return in 3yrs..
.....He was such a bumbling f**kin idiot it did my head in.

decent film. i enjoyed it. i couldn't avoid the hype and by the time i watched it on blu ray, i was slightly under whelmed.

did anyone think the main character was totally channelling al pacino in the last scene?

he was giving it all this "come on!! come to me!! i'll take you all to hell!" when he was in the mech and he had a totally jo'burg tony montana thing going on.
