I'm going to cry foul here, and for a few reasons:
1. The title of your post (and the subsequent "diggs") is incredibly misleading. Calling the N70 is not a Hoax, nor a marketing sham or whatever. From reading the headline of your story I got the impression that you were implying that Nokia had put a VGA lens in and put a 2MP label on it or something like that. You should title it better, perhaps "Nokia N70 Camera Defect" or something like that, since you acknowledge it's a specific defect anyways.
2. There was no marketing hype to say that the N70 was a superior cameraphone, other than the 2MP label. It's not advertized as some huge powerhouse camera phone. In fact, the fact that it's a camera phone should have tipped you off that it's not going to be up to snuff with say a Sony or Nikon digital camera. It's common sense in today's world that phones don't take as good of pictures as standalone cameras do.
3. WTF would you buy a 2MP cameraphone with no autofocus or anything if you're an optical engineer? That'd be like an audiophile buying an ipod and using the included headphones and then posting how they are a hoax and not really up to snuff with the Shure E3 or whatever the uber-expensive ones are.
4. 99.999% of people could care less how their cameraphone performs under tests like that. They weren't shopping for a camera and then said, oh what the heck why not get one with a phone slapped onto it? They were phone shopping and then said, "oh what the heck, why not get one with a camera slapped onto it?" There's a difference.
That's it for now. Plus I personally think you should emphasize the ending a bit more. You discovered that the unit you have has a defect, and thus isn't a good indicator of the population.
