Disappointed by the Nokia N70 Camera

I recently got a nokia n70 and being an optical engineer I decided to test it to the fullest using techniques i use at work and well the results actually shocked me. I found that the new phone i recieved was actually worst then my older motorola razr. I wrote it up on my blog and you can see check it out.

The Nokia N70 2MP Myth

you call it a myth, but from my understanding, you said it was the manufacturing process (off center something or other). So it is a 2MP camera, just not performing well due to the lens(?) being off centre. I dont know, maybe it was just the one you got. because I have the 6275i (2MP cam) and the pics look great (to me. I am not an optical engineer) but nice write up!

I snapped standard pics and found it looked fine til I had to test it out for real. and then thats what I found what happened appeared to be a defect in the optics. If you as a normal user had gotten it you would have thought it was fine. so how many more could be out there that have these defects?

I noticed my N70 cam was significantly poorer in quality than the supposedly equal 2MP cam on the K750/w810i. I found the nokia grainy and the colours were muted. Also it performed more poorly in low light.

I'm going to cry foul here, and for a few reasons:

1. The title of your post (and the subsequent "diggs") is incredibly misleading. Calling the N70 is not a Hoax, nor a marketing sham or whatever. From reading the headline of your story I got the impression that you were implying that Nokia had put a VGA lens in and put a 2MP label on it or something like that. You should title it better, perhaps "Nokia N70 Camera Defect" or something like that, since you acknowledge it's a specific defect anyways.

2. There was no marketing hype to say that the N70 was a superior cameraphone, other than the 2MP label. It's not advertized as some huge powerhouse camera phone. In fact, the fact that it's a camera phone should have tipped you off that it's not going to be up to snuff with say a Sony or Nikon digital camera. It's common sense in today's world that phones don't take as good of pictures as standalone cameras do.

3. WTF would you buy a 2MP cameraphone with no autofocus or anything if you're an optical engineer? That'd be like an audiophile buying an ipod and using the included headphones and then posting how they are a hoax and not really up to snuff with the Shure E3 or whatever the uber-expensive ones are.

4. 99.999% of people could care less how their cameraphone performs under tests like that. They weren't shopping for a camera and then said, oh what the heck why not get one with a phone slapped onto it? They were phone shopping and then said, "oh what the heck, why not get one with a camera slapped onto it?" There's a difference.

That's it for now. Plus I personally think you should emphasize the ending a bit more. You discovered that the unit you have has a defect, and thus isn't a good indicator of the population.
