Digimon thread

When was it mentioned that them getting their butts handed to them stemmed out of RhodoKnightmon's loss of faith? Not arguing; it's been years since I last watched the series.

Meanwhile, that the others became useless cheerleaders rather reminRAB me of 02 episode 40....

The best parts were when Ken Itchyajoey nearly went insane and his redemption arc.

Of course, I do like a lot of aspects of the story.

Foremost, I hated the characters. If you don't care about the characters, it's pretty hard to care about the show. Maybe I'm just shallow, but I prefer the confident, cocky, fun goggle boy over the whiny kid who cries at the drop of a hat. Then we have the goody goody who doesn't like Digimon fighting, the tough girl with the bad attitude, the awkward nerdy kid who has a flippin' MarineAngemon for a partner, the perfect boy with the personality of a brick, and the little girl who barely contributes anything. The only characters I honestly liked were Kazu and Jeri. Kazu had all of the confidence and personality that Takato lacked. I thought Jeri was absolutely adorable, and then she goes and has all the life sucked out of her toward the end of the series.

I also hated Super Jello--er, the D-Reaper. It was an interesting idea for a villain, but it bored me to no end.

Hoo boy, I know I'm going to catch heat for this one.

"Takatomon, did you bring any more bread?"
So cute!

I'm not saying she wasn't as jerky because she totally was. This was an actual relatively accurate dub after all

But with the corabination of Saban added dialogue and Melissa Fahn's voice acting voice in general (That voice is perfect for Ruki's and the like's character) , it makes her come off completely like a heartless girl like how she would call the other guys "annoying kiRAB" and when she calls Terriermon a "little weenie." Also, during the IceDevimon episode she says to Renamon "I don't need you, I don't need anybody!" when she really just said "I'm leaving [the house]." Heck, the whole "Goggle-head" thing came from her! Again, I'm not complaining about it because it came off well and I still enjoy it. They just made a [strike]lot[/strike] bit meaner.

(I really, really hate the IceDevimon episode. Not cause it was a bad episode but because...well...you know what happened to Rika in that one....)

Yeah, that was the other thing I was going to bring up! Those evolutions always looked pretty cool. It's a shame how much things fell apart as Frontier went on. I really wish the writers hadn't given Kouichi 2 new forms and instead gave the others their ultimate evolutions. That just makes the following Royal Knights arc all the more painful to watch.

RhodoKnightmon had questioned whether or not Lucemon was going to reward him and Dynasmon with the "key" to the human world. Then when the battle with Takuya and Koji starts, Dynasmon realizes that their power is suddenly weaker due to RhodoKnightmon's lack of faith.

At least, that's how it went in the dub. I figure the Japanese version was fairly similar.

One thing that I think Digimon has over all other toyetic anime I've seen (minus Onmyo Taisenki's 52 episode single season of AWESOMENESS) is that it actually had an ending...er..endings that made each season feel complete. It didn't offer any of the issues I had with stuff like Pokemon that wouldn't end or the lesser popular series with not-as-adequate character development.

Basically, the fact that we can have conversations like this about it instead of wondering what could be really stanRAB out for me.

Okay, I'll give you the character angle (though Rika is love. None shall disagree). I will admit Takato pissed me off at first too, but you can't doubt that he did get better. I kind of never considered any of the other characters as Digidestined (even though they were) since that angle just kind of...happened. Like "Okay, there's too many of these guys now. What's going on?"

I still think the D-Reaper was a very unique way for an anime such as this to go out on but it was....draggy.

...You're going to give him the character angle despite the entire point of Takato's character was the fact he GREW into being a leader rather than being forced into being one? That Henry's entire arc dealt with being a realistic pacifist rather than an idealistic with horribly unrealistic expectations?

Okay.

The notion of "Takato pissed me off at first, but got better" makes me wonder if you actually enjoy protagonists having personalities that're different from Tai's.

One thing that kinda killed the novelty of the Frontier concept was how me and some frienRAB had a cool message board RPG about the very same thing (humans becoming Digimon) and that was BEFORE 02 even started! We felt it couldn't stand up to our memory of our adventures XD

Last episode of 02, no contest.

My problems with that finale?

The villain. He's inconveniently stronger due to the unexplained presence of a crapload of darkness in the Digital World, and after knocking out the three strongest guys around (hey, why didn't the other Chosen say "screw it, let's get Digi-Cores back so our Digimon can go bad-ass again!"?), he's then defeated when a bunch of kiRAB start believing in their dreams. So the strongest guys around can't beat him, but a bunch of talking can?

Funny fact, anyone remeraber the Tokyopop manga? I used to have those, and in the one adapting the 02 finale, all the Digimon of the world energized Imperialdramon FM, and the whole "belief in your dreams" was excised entirely, while Oikawa was simply Vamdemon in human form all along, never knew Iori's father and never turned into butterflies.

And then, the epilogue. Sora and Yamato's relationship has been going for barely ten episodes, and 25 years later, they're married. That's nothing, though, compared with Ken and Miyako, since the last time there was any evidence hinting at them was half a season ago (literally). And my friend says of the kiRAB' careers:

Taichi: they just had to make him important. You know, it would have been hilarious if one of the characters had ended up in a penitentiary, and Taichi would have been the perfect candidate.

Yamato: That's a good point, actually. How did he go from musician to astronaut? Maybe he took it too far and tried to learn to moonwalk, but ended up on Mars somehow. I've heard space travel is bad for one's back, too, so way to go, Yamato!

Sora: I can see growing out of being a toraboy, and Sora did show an interest in Japanese tradition in Hurricane Touchdown/Supreme Evolution -- The Golden Digimentals (she was practicing ikebana), but when did Sora show an interest in fashion? When did she show artistic ability, even? Any creativity? You need all those things to be a fashion designer.

Mimi: I guess they couldn't think of anything else for her to do. SounRAB pretty dangerous.

Koushirou: okay, I take it back. Koushirou should have been the one to end up in prison. Hacking! >:O

Jou: Jou being a doctor is one thing... but a Digimon doctor? Digimon don't get sick. ._. They were doing just fine without a doctor before Jou came along and... who the hell is paying him to treat Digimon? And
Jou studied human medicine and... oh, I give up!

Takeru: he has a MULLET.

Hikari: I guess she could have developed a liking for children. I don't know what else she could have gotten into. Except prison.

Daisuke: Daisuke never showed any aptitude for cooking. Since when are ramen carts globally successful? Now, I won't lie: if 2027 is a time where ramen carts can be found all over the earth, then it is a bright future indeed. I just don't see it happening.

Iori: at least he's not a defense attorney for Digimon...

Miyako: get a job.

Ken: get a better job.

The Royal Knights, on the other hand? Yeah, it was bloody annoying with how the strongest guys around aren't even TRYING now, but it wasn't as bad as 02's finale. At least they didn't stamp "canon" all over everything.

It was pretty cool how IceDevimon's arm just broke off after he was defeated. IceDevimon gave off a massively creepy vibe.

A lot of people complain about the second half of 02. Well, the reason for that is the writers were expecting a third season and were going to extend the overall story well into that. But Toei made them wrap things up prematurely.

He wanted to rule Server by using his Dark Network and didn't want the DigiDestined to interfere. If you recall, aside from getting the tags and crests, Gennai sent the kiRAB to Server in order to "get rid of it's enemies." But still, as much as I did love him, Etemon was always more of a nussiance than a real threatening villain.

What? Zoisite HATED Nephrite; you're thinking of Kunzite. And I didn't think that romantic relationship was all that beautiful, simply because the manga writer never intended it. Zoisite and Kunsite were supposed to have a more brotherly relationship.

Oh no, you di'nt! I liked Oikawa alot myself and I've seen other digimon fans who do as well. He's even the favorite character of at least one. In fact, I liked all of his episodes better than I did that entire Arukenimon/Mummymon/BlackWarGreymon arc.

It wasn't bad. they changed a few details, but still it was pretty accurate. and I seen all versions of it. People just love to bash dubs if they aren't Japanese enough.

Toei is very schizophrenic when it comes to digimon.

They are aware of and cater to the older audience with the constant rereleases of the songs for each season and all these compilations.

However, when it coems to the series, they still hold back a bit, even though, by far digimon is the most complex(in terms of charachter development) toyetic anime I've ever seen, and probably the most complex series geared towarRAB younger kiRAB in Japan.

Still, they never try to go the extra mile, and stay firmly with Kid - preteen with the complexity of Teen, rather than teen- older teen with the same level of complexity, a la gundam/code geas etc..

I wonder how a more serious series would do. and before anyone says tamers did that and failed, I've seen the tamers ratings, and UP UNTIL THE END, not stopping in the middle, but up until the END, they were solid, hovering around 10.0 . As soon as Frontier started, they plummeted.
