Oh, why not. It's been awhile since I told the story of my newbie days, when I basically didn't know a thing about any of this.
I'd seen anime before Toonami. In the early days I knew what Dragon Ball was, I knew what Sailor Moon was, and I had vague memories of stuff from the 80's and I saw the occasional cartoon on scifi saturday mornings by chance that was quite a shock at the time. I specifically recall Lodoss War and what I think was the Casshan: Robot Hunter OVA, and project A-Ko.
But at that age, while it was drastically different to me I didn't know what any of it was. Seriously, I thought "anime" was some word that the channel had made up. Before you laugh too much, you have to understand that at the time I'm talking about, I didn't have the internet. If anime magazines of any sort were carried locally I didn't notice--in any event, I wasn't looking for them and didn't even know they were something to look FOR.
But then Toonami came along, and roughly around that time was when dial-up was gettable. So between that programming and the internet, I slowly caught on to what was going on...1998 was important since Robotech resurrected vague memories (I'm convinced I saw it in syndication in the 80's), and much searching was done about Sailor Moon and DBZ since--gasp!--they were back on TV and it turned out that the syndicated runs from before hadn't even gotten close to finishing. And what's this, they got it wrong about what a Super Saiyn is?!?!?!
Then 2000 turned me into a serious fan with Gundam Wing...everything I was doing to learn more about anime stuff increased drastically at that point. My search for Toonami stuff eventually led me to CNX, and then I discovered my University's anime club in fall 2002, and then I found the forum in early 2003...and history marches onward from there.
