We would build a tower so tall it would reach the heavens so we could conspire against him, so he split us up and gave us different languages?

It's symbolic.... I think the "different languages" symbolise different opinons and schools of thought... he wanted people to be divided so that they wouldn't collectively rebel agaist him.

O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into NATIONS AND TRIBES, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with Allah is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa [i.e. he is one of the Muttaqun (the pious. See V.2:2)]. Verily, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.
( سورة الØ*جرات , Al-Hujraat, Chapter #49, Verse #13)

And among His Signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the difference of your LANGUAGES and colours. Verily, in that are indeed signs for men of sound knowledge.
( سورة الروم , Ar-Room, Chapter #30, Verse #22)

Back in the day, that's what happened. It was the people's evil desires that screwed them over!!

Yes, when men all worked together God said (to the Son) look what they do and soon nothing will be impossible for them, and we would have self destructed long ago.. then where would you and I be? (Not born.) In the not so distant future when all men (loosely) join into one global unit, well, the bible prophesies the worst dictatorship and genocide ever.

No, he gave us different languages (we already had different cultures) because the humans at the time thought they could build a tower and be God's right hand men. They were the most UN humble people on earth! They thought they could do anything, achieve anything, that they were the very best and God might even need their help.

That, the stupidity of mankind, is why we have languages.

We think in terms of "alike is nice". God thinks in terms of "different is nice". It is clear that we do not think as God does, and I suspect the ones who are wrong are us.

I don't take the bible literally. I believe that God gave us a way to speak and a brain and it was up to us to decide how we would use these things to communicate. Because he gave us a brain and free will, he had to know that we would use this to learn other languages.
