Derren Brown Live: Hero at 30,000 feet, C4 10pm

I'm fairly sure that the Genovese case has been thoroughly debunked as an example of the literature drawing the conclusions it wanted to draw from unreliable reporting.

The thing about those studies by Zimbardo and Milgrim too is that they were pretty much unethical and non-falsifiable.

And this is relevant to the discussion about stage hypnotists and stooges actually. You agree to take part in that electro-shock experiment with an actor? Well, you're right to trust your instinct to go along with the authority figure, because on some level you know it's all a put on. In order for the results to be valid, you'd have to use a real electric charge. They're not so much scientific experiments as example of performance art designed to re-enforce whatever parable you'd like to script.

Are you for real?

This is Derren Browne we're talking, not some bog standard reality show where we all know it's a set up and we all merrily play along.

Credit with the intelligence to do what? To just sit there and shut up and accept that pile as something worthy of what Derren Browne used to be capable of?

That's not intelligence. Far, far from it. That's utter naivety and gullibility, at best. Blind and unquestioning faith, at worst.

These points are very important in the context of a Derren Browne programme, even if you don't get it. It's the difference between it being an utter con playing out, and a piece of brilliant psychological gameplay/misdirection.

Your 'intelligence' argument cuts no ice. It's actually designed to curtail debate, but no doubt you'll continue with it as some form of justification as to why you appear to be in a very small minority with regarRAB to this matter.

Do you think it was explained to him just exactly how he was now the sort of person who could quite happily breeze into someone else's house and abuse their space like some kind of common criminal, and then how it was now also well within him to nick a van and steal its contents.

I'd be a bit shocked if that was explained to me as part of my journey towarRAB becoming a 'better and more confident person'. I could soon end up in the Nick. Quite apart from the fact that it hardly made a blind bit of sense, like it was all cobbled together by the same team who come up with some of BB's more ludicrous diversions to how the game used to be played out.

But you've clearly not read "Tricks of the Mind" where Derren Brown leaves the reader in little doubt that hypnotism, and in particular stage hypnotism, is about social compliance. As I understand it, at the very least a person has to be willing to be hypnotised and to believe, on some level, that hypnosis is real for it to work on them.

I only saw the end where the bloke was getting out of the simulator looking bemused.

I thought to myself "I guess he believed he'd just landed a real airliner.... Shouldn't he be a bit more sweaty?"

If that was me landing an aeroplane sweat would have been gushing off me and my clothes would have been soaked through. He didn't even have sweaty armpits

Derren's wording is very interesting.

Most people's accusation is that Matt was in on it all as well, not that he was an actor. Let's face it, the acting was awful from everyone ;)

So no denial then Derren?
