Derren Brown Live: Hero at 30,000 feet, C4 10pm

Why do you think hypnosis isn't widely used as an anaesthetic or form of pain relief, bramly?

1. Evil pharmaceutical companies controlling the market
2. It doesn't work reliably to the extent required
3. It doesn't really work at all
4. Other (please specify)

  1. You need to provide proof of this. It's difficult to come up with a test, but nonetheless the onus is on you making this claim to back it up. There is no acceptance in the scientific community at large that hypnosis has such power.
  2. I asked you for links to such cases earlier. You provided some cases of rape/assault where the accused happened to be a hypnotist. There was no evidence nor any conclusion that the crimes were committed without the knowledge of the ladies involved. I want something that outwardly appears consensual, but where a court of law has ruled that the victim was hypnotised. That would really have some sway with me, and give me something to look into. Quoting a passage from a book about a 100 year old case (we've moved on a bit from them with respect to science in the courtroom) where the accused was ultimately found innocent anyway, doesn't really cut it.

Lets hope this never happens to him for real. He'll step in and fail[/QUOTE

I was on a plane going to Spain and the pilot came over the tannoy and said This is one of the safest planes in he air as it had AVL or Advanced Landing system. This is where the ground computer/radar talks to the plane , thus a very good chance of landing safely. But will still need in cockpit assistance.

Still think this program was CRAP:p

Yes it's possible, but how did the producers know that Matt was going to see this van and think "Oh, I'll throw a party" and go and invite the neighbours. I mean that's a rather huge leap of faith to make.

Although I suppose it's possible his Mother/GF was told "If Matt comes back and mentions a party, ask him to go invite the neighbours".

Who knows. :)

I am training to be a clinical psychologist and I don't know how to instantly hypnotise someone or force them to sleepwalk, that isn't psychology.

Since starting at university, tutors have implicitly told me not to believe anything that Brown says or does. He is a magician who feigns a knowledge of psychology, making a mockery of modern psychology. He is considered a fake and a charlatan. He is a magician and a good entertainer, that is all.

If those bits were filmed after the fact though, then you'd think they would have made sure they were done well. As they'd have multiple attempts at it if required. With the party bit, the first response would be "You both looked at the camera, let's do that again"

For me, the explanation is far simpler. It's all just got very lazy. From the National Lottery stunt onwarRAB, the format of his shows is this:

1) The trick is now always on the audience, not the participants.
2) Fill 99% of the show with a load of sloppy nonsense, this is the misdirection for the trick that will come right at the end.
3) The final 1% is the trick on the audience, which is to convince them that what happened before they could do / could happen to them.

For the lottery the trick was just lazy splitscreen after a load of wisdom of crowRAB rubbish.

Tonight's trick was even lazier, just to present a complete work of fiction as fact and then tell people that they might be the next Matt in the coming month. That's why there was so many blatant film homages in it, it was all fiction.

It's the little bits at the end, possibility of winning the lottery/having themselves turned into a hero, that makes some people want to buy into it.

Again, if you are going to fake bits you might as well fake it all. It's easier, especially if the outcome of the desired trick is the same in either case.

I was going to say something similar to ginger geek last night but couldn't be bothered. Rude to the core, that's all I can say.

Derren Brown is one of my all time favourite tv personalities I love his shows and was excited for this one as normal. I would love to see him live and still would as he is amazingly talented. This was pure dross though and I wish it wasn't, as you say the disappointment is not from people "out to get Brown" but genuine fans who are disappointed he could put something of such low standard on tv.

Can I also just highlight this excerpt for particular lolworthiness please. Aside from the fact that the lawyer is also a hypnotist (!), let's also say hypnotism has all the awesome powers you claim. Doesn't this render any testimony invalid where he's had any kind of access to the witness? He could have hypnotised them all and nobody would ever know! Christ, he was probably the father himself and framed an innocent man (indeed he was subsequently found innocent!)

Lol.

Hey now that could be an awesome twist - Matt DOESN'T step in and save the plane, they crash, and end up on a mysterious island for the next few years. :p
