Derren Brown Live: Hero at 30,000 feet, C4 10pm

In a very early Mind Control trick, Derren correctly predicts that a member of the audience will draw a Tractor.

But on the DVD Commentary he points out at the start that he says to the audience "You're very ATTRACTIVE people!"

Attractive - A Tractor. Simple but brilliant.

That's the kind of Derren trick I like - where you can watch it second time round and pick up on something, and get a slight inkling of how he acheived a trick. Of course, knowing Derren, there was probably far more to it than that....

Pretty sure I understand the whole live thing now. For anyone complaining: the plane ride is not live. They'd have to fit the entire journey and it landing and the conclusion afterwarRAB in this hour show. And how would they have edited all the shots together? I will gladly adit that I'm ashamed of myself that it took so long for me to realize this bit is not live.

Derren is live on the ground after this flight. That's why there's daylight on the plane.

And of course, no-one ever breaks those. Oh, apart from The Stig. And the previous Stig. And no doubt, the next Stig, if there is one.

As Derren says in his book, he doesn't use stooges- apart from anything else, there's no way he could afford to pay off all his volunteers and their frienRAB and family members.

Personally, I really enjoyed last night's show. Sure, it's not his best stuff, where within one 8 minute segment, he leaves you bamboozled and wondering how the heck he did that (eg beating the chess masters and guessing the number of pieces they'd all have left). But still enjoyable, and laugh-out-loud funny in various places- for instance, who on earth lets DB tie them to a train track?! I thought it was great entertainment :)

Good for you! Have you read 'Yes Man' by Danny Wallace? that's also a good encouragement to try something out of the ordinary- funny read too!

Well,

Derren got you all watching and discussing it.

Job done then really.

That's the thing with Derren. You may say you won't watch his next programme... but you will! :D

But be surprised when they continue to watch the singer's shows, all the while claiming their career is over whilst giving them the rating and the attention they want.

I have a feelign that DB might try and defend the "No Stooges" disclamier by saying that it depenRAB on your definition of "a stooge".

Is a Stooge anyone in a venue/show who is workign for the performer unbeknowenst to the general public (i.e. gathering info and reporting it back)? Or is a Stooge specifically someone who the performer enacts with in front of the audience, who is in fact in cahoots with the performer?

I think they are both stooges but DB might argue that the first definition is "an assistant".

Thoughts?

I didn't believe the whole horse racing show, in that logistically it was just too much of a nightmare. Even just for four 6 horse races, you're looking at having to email 1,296 people AND these all being live email addresses and then people paying actually paying proper attention to them, at the same time NOT telling them that it's part of a Derren Brown show. And, of course, you need them not to know each other, or write about it on Facebook or a blog, etc etc

Ultimately, it didn't really matter for the point of the show, which I don't doubt was very educational for many. Plus, there were a few cutaways where we saw some other tricks being done too, all good stuff really.

I haven't seen last night's show yet (I plan to watch it soon) but it sounRAB pretty much similar to the casino one. I maintained then that our hero Ben wasn't an actor (he was too bad), but it emerged that there was a long audition process which selected Ben as 'the one'. Others present at the audition wrote how we was uber-suggestible, to the point where he forgot his name on command, answered to the name Susan, etc. So you don't need an actor, but a simple audition process will give you a DB superfan who wants to be on TV and really will do exactly as you want them to. They might not be convincing, but at least your stooge disclaimer is still ultimately true. We were asked to believe then that you could be hypnotised into withdrawing

Yes, Where is ginger geek today ?.. nurse obviously forgot his medication last night, I hope he's ok.

I agree with you, at his best Derren Brown is brilliant. This was just rubbish. The number of posts show that people still want the type of programmes Derren used to produce, to be left scratching their heaRAB at some bewildering illusion or piece of trickery, all dressed up with healthy chunks of psychobabble.
This show ( and his other recent shows) must have disappointed millions of loyal dedicated fans. How far Derren can test their loyalty remains to be seen.
Unless of course Derren is playing a "long game" with us, and everything will be revealed as being part of some giant illusion..possible, but unlikely.

I thought the show last night was cringe-worrthy, what with the ever more absurd examples of the guys increasing confidence, accompanied by uplifting music. That said, I'm still struggling to understand exactly what Derren was trying to achieve.

I find it hard to believe that he was really trying to pass this off in the way he stated at the outset. whatever people think of Derren, few would deny that he's a very intelligent guy, with a great ability to recognise what peoples visual cues are, and he's also very meticulous. In short, it seems this show looked fake because he wanted us to know/believe it was fake. If mere mortals like us can look at the many camera angles, for example, and deduce it was staged, then Derren certainly would.

where that leaves us, I don't know!

My point around stooges was that he has used one at least once to my knowledge on the TV show seance , in which there was clear disclaimer up front that no stooges had been used. If he lies about it once he can lie about it again .

This thread has turned into the X-files - I love it;)

So who or what created crop circles then? If not man-made then the suggestion is that they were created by........?

Who was the Evil Bus Hypnotist (EBH)? And where is he now? He could be behind you!!

The truth is out there, people!!!

What is interesting is that Derren himself has some very insightful thoughts on hypnotism in his book Tricks of the Mind and the gist of it is that the hypnotism he practices works BUT he is very much of the opinion that there is no such things as hypnotism and it is more down to the subjects belief in hypnotism. He absolutely does not believe that there is such a thing as a hypnotic trance. He also can't rule out that large elements of it are people playing along.

At best its somebody in a heightened state of relaxation who is willing to participate in whats happening.

He has severe worRAB of warning around getting involved with sites that promote on-line hypnotism courses.

His views on much of NLP are very pretty interesting as well and he warns that many of the claims bear closer investigation.

So the worry is that the stuff he puts on TV do nothing to give a flavour of what he really thinks and thats got to be something that should trouble him surely, Merely putting warnings in an obscure book doesn't cut it for me.

Another interesting line from TOTM which I am sure he is saying in jest is " I by no means consider myself to be particularly well known outside of a small group of oftentimes disturbed Channel 4 viewers.." Lol Many a true word spoken in jest but surely he has a duty to these folk as well ?

Given how gullible and easily swayed 'Matt' is, I really don't think he's suitable Policeman-material.

That's if any of this is actually real, and not just some silly 'They're all actors but there is a deeper message of believing in yourself'.
