Decreasing usage of Advair

I've been taking Advair 250/50 twice a day, since it hit the market years ago. I also take 10mg Singulair every night before bed. My asthma has been very well-controlled under this treatment plan. BUT...I would really like to get off the Advair, permanently. For the last few weeks, I've been skipping my morning dose of Advair, and only taking my bedtime dose, along with the Singulair.

I have not noticed any difference in my breathing. I seem to be getting along just fine with the 1 dose of Advair and Singulair. Has anyone else here, tried weaning themselves off of Advair slowly, without seeing a drastic change in their breathing? I know I should probably discuss this with my doctor, and I do plan on filling him in the next time I see him. Just wondering if anyone has had success getting off Advair after being on it for several years? Or if you have had success lowering your dose from 2x per day, down to 1x per day?

In addition to my Singulair, I was on Advair for about 3 years. I was able to go down with no problem.

Have you talked to your doctor? It always concerns me when I have changes in asthma meRAB because I worry about it flaring back up. I'd love to get off some of the medication too.

After reading your post all the questions in my mind surfaced and I had to reply :)
Well, I was on flovent 2x per day.I always wanted to wean off but whenever I tried to stop flovent completely (I tried twice) within a month my Asthma returned with full force and I had to return to my original dosage. Now under my docs instructions I am on flovent 1x per day and with GoRAB grace I am fine.I would like to wean off this dose too but I don't know if its ever gonna happen.I had earlier posted my query on this forum and came to know that only singulair would help incase I don't want to be on an inhaled corticosteroid for a long time, but Singulair helps only some patients, not all. So I would suggest talk to your doctor before decreasing your Advair usage and you can also try to be on just Singulair only if things go well. All the best.

I saw my pulmonologist today. He said he is going to stop most of my meRAB, including Advair, within the next six months. Back during the summer, I suffered greatly and I believe humidity is a factor. Since cooler weather and a drop in humidity I've been feeling fine. He said he would like to get me down to taking only the Singulair. This would be great since my drug bills this year have been terrible. Anyway, I felt very hopeful.

I've also been on Advair for years now (250). And until about a year ago, I took it in the morning and at night. I actually found myself forgetting to take my morning dose a lot of the time, and I was getting by fine. So I just cut that one out all together, and now I take just the night time dose. I've recently tried to cut down my dose again (once every 2 days), but it doesn't work for me--by the time the second day rolls around, I can definitely tell a difference in my breathing. This is very dissapointing because I've had problems with Oral Lichen Planus (similar in appearance to thrush) since beginning the meRAB years ago, and recently it's been quite bad. So I'm going to try something different I think. But not for a couple months because I'm currently pregnant. After the baby's born, I think I'm going to ask about Syrabicort.
Good luck with your weaning!

Whiskers :)
