Death Note US Remake being written

Yeah, well, he's anything BUT fit for the role, even if he does reflect the fearsome aspect of Light, HE ISN'T FLIPPING LIGHT, RUN IT THROUGH YOUR FLIPPING MIND. Seriously, Light is supposed to be good looking, but not Zac Efron style.

Pretty boy Efron CANNOT be Light. Think about it: if they cast someone other than him, would all these fangirls come flocking? No, or would these fangirls for that matter TOUCH a manga or anime? Most likely not. But have him be Light, and thousanRAB of fangirls will come JUST FOR HIM, NOT because they want to see such a cool story.

Yeah, I so called this one. But you guys have to admit. This one seems the least likely to suffer a huge amount of butchering

The fact that it's a draft means that it's going to be changed. I don't see what the use is in worrying about it, much less complaining to anybody at WB. If this thing gets finished, it'll look very different.

Ok, let's calm down here. This is supposed to be a fun thread, discussing the possibilities of a proposed US Death Note movie. There's nothing to be gained from anyone claiming they alone possess a clarity towarRAB it that everyone else lacks. It is just a movie after all, entertainment intended to be fun. So in that spirit, show respect to others and don't take the matter so seriously.

Hmm, I don't want to watch that movie anymore. That just sounRAB like someone read a few selected pages of the first chapter, not the whole thing, just Light discovering it, and testing out the Death Note.

Here's to the rewrite being more close to the actual story this time around.

noooooo! why do this america? oh well i bet the japanese verison will be better than this! (yes i have seen them both live action movies they both rock!)

You're right, man. Good point, and thanks for pointing it out.

Also, doesn't it stand to reason that WB wouldn't want a draft leaked out unauthorized? Think about it, the "it's since been changed" explanation probably won't convince many people after the debacle with the leaked POTC3 script, so it's still reasonable to think they just wouldn't want a draft up on the internet. A draft still gives a clue as to how it's being written, and if people see the first draft, they'll probably start harassing WB, and it being a draft, it would seem, wouldn't be enough to put them off.

I, for one, wouldn't want a draft of my work put up on the internet, let alone an early one. People would immediately start criticizing it, and I'd probably be borabarded with complaints - a bit annoying, no? Especially considering it's at the early planning stages.

We've gotten the comic, the TV cartoon, and the live action movies. Pretty much all the relevant Death Note merchandise out there has been faithfully translated.

I fail to see an issue with a Western adaptation. Hell, with the American anime industry in the state it's in, I welcome it, and so should you.

Yeah, you're right, that was uncalled for, I'll tone it down a notch or two.

I'm still healing from how they screwed L's character in the Japanese movies.

Misa is also nowhere to be seen. The only thing close we get is his girlfiend Sophia, who is based off Light's girlfiend Shiori from the Japanese live action film. Not to mention
neither Luke nor L are killed off at the end of the movie. In fact, it enRAB with Luke giving up the Death Note and deciding to spend the rest of his life fighting the good fight and help those unjustly convicted as an attempt to undo all the harm he's done with the Death Note. There is a strong suggestion that L realized in the end that Luke was Kira, though.

If it is a real script, it may not be the best, but I still think it looks a lot better than Dragon Ball Evolution. Death Note is a simple story that can easily be changed to any setting, so I'm actually ok with the Americanization. It's possible that Ryuk wasn't included simply to make the movie a little more realistic, but I find that hard to believe when there is still a notebook with the power to kill someone by simply writting their name in it.

I will admit, Death Note is one of those stories that can take place anywhere. I was thinking of that mentality as I thought changing Light to Luke was okay. The problem is that I don't think that a lot of people (including me) want it told like....this.

And yeah, no Ryuk means automatic fail. Like, before it gets in theaters fail.

Oh no, he IS Light. In every aspect (well except for the brilliance but who knows maybe he's smart too). The real question is whether or not he's Kira.

And he seems like a good actor. I'll give him benefit of the doubt.

Agreed. Also, while there may be some exceptions (Watchmen?), I don't buy into the idea that comic X or anime Y can't possibly be made into a decent movie. I say that if a movie is not well produced it's because the people involved did a crappy job, not because any adaptation attempt is doomed to fail. Manga and anime may be unique, but they don't exist on some plane of existence that's completely alien to everything else. The classic example, DB Evolution. It tanked because it was a badly made and misguided project, not because Dragon Ball is untouchable holy grail.

Also, add me to the Zac Efron supporters. I've seen excellent arguments for casting him as the innocent young adult no one would suspect, whereas the only case to the contrary seems to be that he was in High School Musical. Also, I have no personal qualms with casting a big name to "trick" audiences into watching a quality story...so long as said name can do the job.

LOL

You know of I can't think of anyone who can play Mello or Near (that is if they appear in the sequels)? Any guesses?

There are already two films with Ryuk (plus another two if you count the compilation films). While it would be nice to have him I don't know if his presence is an absolutely necessity again.

Besides, this is a first draft and meant to be seen only by those who are still sorting out what does/doesn't work. It's impossible to make any real judgments because nothing's set in stone, and it's going to go through several revisions. This draft is dated from April, so it's probably outdated already.

If anything, though, I think it speaks well of the project that so much of it remains like the original so far.

Exactly. Water under the bridge now, but I've had people tell me until the first trailer of Dark Knight came out, they weren't positive on Ledger being the Joker. The exact same thing can happen with Efron.

Now on the idea of trilogies or single films, I'm mixed on both. Setting up a trilogy would be good, but if the film borabs, then it would be a waste. If you make it a single, could a well thought out DN movie be finished in less than 3 hrs?
