I remember when I was a kid, snow was AWESOME. Though I didn't play in it as much, it was still cool waking up in the morning and seeing a fresh blanket of snow on the ground, and knowing that school was canceled. And it was great, because I get a lot more snow than most people in my area because of where I live.
Now that I have a car, a license, a job, and a good old fashioned desire to be out of the house often, it freaking sucks.
I can't drive in that shit, I've never had to. Not only have I never driven in snow, but the cars my family own aren't built for snowy conditions. We don't have 4 wheel drive. We don't have chains. We don't have studded tires. We don't have snow tires.
Over the past two days, I have gotten 9 inches (maybe even 10!) of snow at my house. Sure, it's pretty to look at, but I've felt trapped inside my house. I live just far enough away from stores and, um, civilization, that it's too far to walk in a decent amount of time, with a decent amount of safety (can't depend on the actions of drivers on snowy/icy roads)... and we most definitely couldn't drive in that nonsense... we tried last night. If we had tried to go down a hill, I'm pretty sure we would have slid into oncoming traffic and gotten mowed down.
The suckiest thing of all about this bullshit is that I have work tomorrow at 7 in the morning. It's gonna be dark. It's gonna be cold. It's gonna be hell cleaning all that snow off the cars, and it's going to be worse trying to get down the driveway. And the road I live on isn't too keen on sand trucks, apparently.
Yes, I know, it's been warming up, it's been raining, the snow is melting already. But think about this: 10 hours ago, it was 9-ish inches deep. I took the dog out a few hours ago, maybe 2, maybe 3 hours... and the snow seemed the same. Maybe it'd lost an inch, but it still reached pretty far up on my shins. I can only imagine how high it's going to be tomorrow.
And not only snow, but now the rain and wind? WTF is up with the weather lately. We're going to have gusts of 70 mph where I live tomorrow, which is totally not cool. Trees are coming down, for sure. And the power's gonna go out, too. The news is already saying this storm is gonna be worse than the one we had last year, in which our power was out for 3 days, maybe 4? Yuck.
I just hope it doesn't get too bad.
/end whining
