Dear Snow, I hate you.

I remember when I was a kid, snow was AWESOME. Though I didn't play in it as much, it was still cool waking up in the morning and seeing a fresh blanket of snow on the ground, and knowing that school was canceled. And it was great, because I get a lot more snow than most people in my area because of where I live.

Now that I have a car, a license, a job, and a good old fashioned desire to be out of the house often, it freaking sucks.

I can't drive in that shit, I've never had to. Not only have I never driven in snow, but the cars my family own aren't built for snowy conditions. We don't have 4 wheel drive. We don't have chains. We don't have studded tires. We don't have snow tires.

Over the past two days, I have gotten 9 inches (maybe even 10!) of snow at my house. Sure, it's pretty to look at, but I've felt trapped inside my house. I live just far enough away from stores and, um, civilization, that it's too far to walk in a decent amount of time, with a decent amount of safety (can't depend on the actions of drivers on snowy/icy roads)... and we most definitely couldn't drive in that nonsense... we tried last night. If we had tried to go down a hill, I'm pretty sure we would have slid into oncoming traffic and gotten mowed down.

The suckiest thing of all about this bullshit is that I have work tomorrow at 7 in the morning. It's gonna be dark. It's gonna be cold. It's gonna be hell cleaning all that snow off the cars, and it's going to be worse trying to get down the driveway. And the road I live on isn't too keen on sand trucks, apparently.

Yes, I know, it's been warming up, it's been raining, the snow is melting already. But think about this: 10 hours ago, it was 9-ish inches deep. I took the dog out a few hours ago, maybe 2, maybe 3 hours... and the snow seemed the same. Maybe it'd lost an inch, but it still reached pretty far up on my shins. I can only imagine how high it's going to be tomorrow.

And not only snow, but now the rain and wind? WTF is up with the weather lately. We're going to have gusts of 70 mph where I live tomorrow, which is totally not cool. Trees are coming down, for sure. And the power's gonna go out, too. The news is already saying this storm is gonna be worse than the one we had last year, in which our power was out for 3 days, maybe 4? Yuck.

I just hope it doesn't get too bad. :( /end whining

Welcome to adulthood.

When you make the transition from non-driver to driver, your hate for snow goes up a million points. My first time driving in the snow I slid on black ice and hit a stop sign. I fucking hate snow.

Sounds like you need some training from a good ol' Saskatchewan driver! lol

We don't get as much snow as we used to, but it's still easily enough to make it interesting on the roads. I've got a front-wheel-drive car, no snow/studded tires, no chains, and so far this winter I'm doing fine. The town I live in is pretty slow about getting sand on any street, also.

There's a completely different tecnique to driving on ice or in snow, than driving in ideal conditions. Stay slower than normal, of course. Accelerate very gradually, and if you start spinning, let off the gas and try again a little slower. Allow lots of extra time for stopping, and if you start skidding, let go of the brakes and slowly press the pedal again until you start skidding again, then let off and do it again. Make sure you're going slow for corners, of course.

I don't think there's been a time yet when I stayed home because there was too much snow. I've stayed home from work because it was so fucking cold, or becuase there was a bad blizzard, but not because of snowy or icy roads. Also, as far as I can remember, I've only lost control once because of ice or snow, and that was from skidding my car through or overtop of a 100 foot long snowbank on the road.

Anyways, gotta get to work. Good luck!

There's a saying around here, that if you can drive in Alaska during the winter, you can drive anywhere. There's an art to it; you have to feel what your car is doing moreso than during the summer.

Luckily, we don't have any snow on the ground, it all melted. Usually we have around 2 feet this time of year. Global Warming ftw!

as much as a pain in the ass snow is it can be cool sometimes just to go on a walk in when it is freshly laid out and not that deep, especially in the suburbs, everything seems calmer

Le sigh. What I wouldn't do for only NINE inches.

When I was growing up, I lived in Mobile, AL. It snowed every three or four years. It was so LITTLE snow, that we had to borrow it from the neighbors yard just to make a snowman.

I lived in Houston for four years after that. It never snowed there. Ever.

Then, I moved to Colorado. FOUR FEET, my first winter. How much snow at my parent's house (9,500ft)? Fucking six feet with drifts up to 12.

Then then one day in May, while it was 80 degrees the day before, I walk outside with sandals on my feet and it's snowing. Yeah. Good times.

Driving is definitely different. BEWARE of black ice. Shudder.

slowly get your car to an empty parking and learn it's movements on snowy terrain. Also, do donuts. Not only are they a blast, but they'll help you relax if you end up fishtailing somewhere. You need to learn your car dear, and control it, don't let it control you. It's a tool, but you need to have respect for it otherwise it'll kill you.

Yes, I live near Shellfish and we never get snow so I am wondering this: When you all have storms and the power goes out, how do you not freeze to death if you don't have a fireplace??

I love snow!!! Even in "adult-hood" I love it...

It prevents me from having to create some lame excuse to not go to work.
I can stay in bed all warm and cuddly and snuggle my kittens longer.
I can make some coffee/coco and watch the snow fall in the valley behind my apartment.
It makes even suburbia hell look pretty and cute.
I love driving (well, more sitting in the passenger seat) in the snow. I have all the gear for foul weather in my trunk, and it's sooo quiet when it's snowing on the roads.
I love putting on my "snow gear" and having snow ball fights with my friends.
I love making snow genetalia on the front lawn of stranger's houses.

SNOW!:D

Well I don't know about Sugarsickness there, but most people out here and further up North that are prone to heavy snowstorms generally have generators that they can use for their houses. Helps tons when that power gets whacked out. And even though most generators can't run a house at full power, low lights and luke-warm temperatures coming from your heater is better than nothing at all.

You're totally right, dude. Snow is AWESOME when you don't have to be out in it. It's beautiful and serene. Peaceful and very quiet.

Snow days are a good time. Especially if you have a fireplace and the Cartoon Network!

I should really stop my bitchin'.
