[sp]See, that was my confusion...it was supposed to be understood in the film that he sold the coin collection and made the anonymous donation, right? What I didn't like was that they'd been keeping in touch, Tim died, they somehow ran into each other after some time at the end...yeah, I didn't like the ending either.

I also was disappointed in the lack of depth in which they went into the autism aspect. There was so much more to Savannah's character arc in that regard and they took it out. And I completely agree about Savannah being unsympathetic. They just didn't do well with making the audience understand why she did what she did, and I personally believe the writers probably thought they had so much story and detail that they didn't know how to creatively adapt that into the film. [/sp]

Thinking about it, I agree with the person above you -- I do like this story better than A Walk to Remember. At this point, they can adapt all kinds of Sparks' novels into film, and I'm pretty sure none of them will hold a candle to The Notebook. Nick Cassavettes (sp?) just needs to direct all of these films from here on out.

oh my god. i just saw this movie and i liked it. the book was great too. i just didnt like the differences that were in the movie compared to the book version.

Honestly, as a person who calls Dear John her favorite book, I was severely disappointed.

My thoughts that could be considered spoilers.
[sp]As a film had I not read the book before hand I would have loved it but they somehow took the heart of the film. What I loved most about the book was the sacrifice John made in the end and taking that away completely ruined it for me. And coupled with the fact that they somehow made Savannahs character completely unsympathetic for me. I do not understand why they made her not write him for 2 months, I don't understand why they made her engaged before she broke up with him, I don't understand (at all) why they made Tim so old and completely creepy.

I didn't like that they made Savannah suddenly discover her dream of the horse farm

I REALLY DIDNT LIKE THE ENDING [/sp]

I thought the last scene with John and his dad was extremely well done though.

Amanda and Channing had amazing chemistry in this movie.

[sp]The movie was good, not great but good. I didn't like how much they cut out from the book, and it was definitely too rushed. I didn't like that Tim died. I did want John and Savannah to end up together, I just wish it had happened a different way. Also Allan being Tim's son was weird. I also wish they had talked more about Savannah's past. Like the problems Savannah had with her past boyfriend. I think it would of helped people that didn't read the book to get a better feel for her character. [/sp]

I am sad they didnt show any scenes from the second leave at her apartment....and yeah it definitely was rushed, but I understand they had alot to fit in....

how do you do spoiler tags?

Just saw it!

i totally agree i was expecting more, but Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum did have really great chemistry!

i think ill have to say it wasnt as good as The Notebook but i may like it more then A Walk To Remember.

I really loved this movie, but the ending left me feeling unsatisfied. I love cheesy movie and dammit I wanted my cheesy ending.

Have you guys read this? 'Dear John' gets a last-minute new ending - NYPOST.com

Hmm, I wonder what they changed about it.

[sp]It's been almost a week since I've seen this and I'm still kind of mad at what they did to my favorite book. I feel like they destroyed the whole entire POINT of the book by not focusing on the sacrifice that John made.

Not to mention that I still don't even understand some of the changes that were made. I see NO reason for Tim being a creepy old man or for Alan being his son for that matter, it made no sense. I see no reason they made Savannah not even write for two months, sure the letters were supposed to come less often but they werent supposed to stop completely.

I just feel like they completely missed a chance to portray a beautiful story of sacrifice instead replacing it with something that could have been from any romantic comedy :sigh:

His dad saved it for me though. And Channing did a wonderful job, I had a hard time sympathizing with Savannah though but I don't think that had anything to do with Amanda.[/sp]

I was slightly disappointed by that aspect too...what about that change didn't you like?

I'm part of the group that was really disappointed in the movie.

[sp] I cried during the hospital scene with John and his dad. That was the only part I cried in and I thought I would cry more.

I liked Channing and Amanda however I thought the romance was SO rushed. They hardly showed any parts when he came back on leave and such.

And Alan being Tim's son? That was kind of random. Not needed to be changed.

Best acting was John's dad. By far. [/sp]

They did show him at the site. They just showed that one part. When Savannah comes in and he's on a ladder or something with a hammer, and she's all surprised to see him. So yeah, that could kinda be helping

i really like this movie, channing tatum was amazing
favorite scene: the scene where his father dies, it was so sad :(
