It will always be one of my fav too.

I was afraid it was going to be like this when I read that they had changed the ending because I really wanted them to keep it as it was because that was the whole point of the book. But I hope I will not be disappointed too much. I still can't wait to see the movie!

Having read the book a couple years ago and re-reading it last week, I'm kinda wishing now that I hadn't. I'm going to see Dear John tomorrow and I really want to enjoy it! I've been anxiously waiting for it and I keep hearing that if you liked the book, you won't like the movie.

I guess I should be happy that I'm not one of these that goes into a movie based on a book with hopes that it will transform every single page on to the screen and it will be just like the book cuz I know it won't happen. And honestly....for this book....I don't care either way. I enjoyed the book, but there were some things in the book that fell flat to me.

People are saying that seemed to make Savannah unsympethetic in the movie. Well honestly, I thought she was quite selfish in the book. I couldn't understand how she could let herself drift away from John and fall for someone else when it was a time that John needed her most. I mean, they made a promise to wait for each other. And it wasn't like years and years went by before she found someone else.

As far as the ending...I'm actually looking forward to it. I was heartbroken with the book ending when I first read it, but the more I thought about it, the more I fell in love with the ending. Because the book was all about sacrifice and letting the person you love go free. So, it was the perfect ending for the book. But I will admit that I wouldn't mind seeing an open ending for the two so that you can decide yourself what happens.

Plus, I'm a sucker for happy endings when it comes to movies. we deal with sad endings all the time IRL, so when it comes to a movie, I like to escape the reality for just a bit....

Anywho, I'm going to see it tomorrow, so I'll come back and post my thoughts! :)

i hope that you do get to the book. not sure if you would want any spoilers so i am going to be spoiler free for you. my sis read the last song and she loved it. i might read it now. lol.

So i think i stopped in once during the first thread, but i have to come in here more often because honestly i haven't been this excited for a movie in a LONG time.

I, like most of you, have read the book a million times. And i realize thing will be changed, which kind of sucks, but im pretty open about what they do with it.

A lot of people at my school went to the midnight showing last night and they all have said they bawled their eyes out and that it was amazing! so i really think the whole deal with it is to just go in with an open mind.

...on the other hand i hope they don't change a lot during the beginning when they are falling in love, because thats my fave part of the book and i dont think it could have been written any better then it was.

ok im done with this long post

I didn't like the ending either.

I think the Notebook will always be my favorite film adaptation.

[sp]I did like the movie, I really did. I loved the scenes where John and Savannah were happy, and I honestly did love any scenes with them. I wanted more with them though. I wanted more talks, more kisses, more handholds, more emotion. I feel like by cutting out John's second leave, when they spent another two weeks together at her apartment - we were missing something. Because honestly, these two were only apart for like less than year before she wrote him about being with Tim. That just aggravated me a good amount. And I didn't understand, in the movie, how it happened with Tim. We couldn't clearly see Tim was in love with her, or that they were even that good of friends. And I hated how Savannah was engaged already to Tim, after how long - 2 months of not writing? Or when did Tim even get sick, before 9/11? But that would be so silly, because at that time they were sending letters to each other all the time. The timeline was just royally screwed up. If the Notebook can do an accurate timeline, I expected this movie to do so too.

I loved Savannah so much, but I completely agree about how they hardly focused on her storyline of wanted to major in psychology, the horse place, Alan - which is not his son, and how she was inspired by Tim's help with Alan and the horses -, and just her general ambition. That was her hope and desire. And I hated how the camp had failed, that just angered me. But again, it always angered me how quickly she fell in love with Tim, stopped writing John, and just everything. The timeline pissed me off.

And the ending. Now when I read the book - I was PISSED. I wanted them to end up together because it was so clear that even though Savannah truly loved Tim, that she was so madly in love with John. I wanted John to be happy, especially after losing his Father (which was done beautifully in the movie, but still not as amazingly as the book), and I wanted them to be happy. But now after seeing the movie, I understand and love the book's ending so much more. First off, them ending up together in the movie - it was so rushed. Well, we don't know technically if they did, but why wouldn't they be together now? I mean, I love the idea of them seeing each other again years later and then finally just falling into each other's arms. It's lovely. But that wasn't the point of the movie/book. The book was about loving someone so much, you would give up your own happiness. That was the entire point of the book. So in the book, by John letting Savannah be with Tim and just wanting her to be happy - it was so moving. And the idea that they still loved each other, and watched the movie - absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful. So yeah, the movie missed that and kind of made them into another romance. Oh wells.

So I did like the movie, will see it again, and probably like it more the second time. I didn't like the Notebook all that much the first couple of times I saw it either. It took me years for me to fall in love with it. Now I can't decide if I love AWTR or TNB more. [/sp]

hmm but thats pretty normal in movies. I am reading last song right now, but I will definately check it out. I have a project to finish all his books. LOL.
