DCI Banks Monday 27 September at 9pm

Another unhappy detective. What will we do when Barnaby goes. I did hear Gideon might return. Got to have one detective with a happy home life. Colombo might be the only other happy detective unless someone can think of another.

Have read all of the Inspector Banks books and wondered for years why they hadn't been serialised.

I always visualised Neil Pearson as playing Banks so was quite surprised to see he reaRAB the audio tapes!

REally don't think ST is right for the role but hope he proves me wrong.

Next we need the Peter James novels serialised.

I've read them all as well and I really enjoy them. I have read that lots of people think that Stephen Tompkinson is a bit lightweight for the role but I'm going to give him a chance. (He was very good in the film Brassed Off). I also love the Tom Thorne character in the Mark Billingham books which are soon to be shown on Sky - unfortunateley I won't be able to watch as we don't subscribe. I agree that the Peter James novels would be good tv drama too. Now who would we want as Roy Grace?.

Anyone notice when Marcus was pulling on his shirt after being with Maggie he was smooth chested. But the man in the coma had a really hairy chest!!?

Either it's integral to the plot or it's a big continuity cock up

I'm another who has read all the books and when I heard months ago that ST was going to be our "hero" I thought "oh no, no good at all, nothing like him". I always find ST plays, well ST really.

Average? That good? Really poor IMO I'm afraid. Doesn't do the great Banks novels justice and Stephen Tompkinson is hopelessly miscast. Why do TV producers feel the need to mess round with author's finely thought-out characters?
What a disappointment. Don't think that I'll bother watching the rest.

Well it ain't in the book (where Marcus is called Terry). But this could be Bouquet of Barbed Wire all over again - artistic licence ..............

Fairly cliched story and Stephen Tomkinson was the wrong person for the lead. They might as well have cast Ant & Dec. I usually like crime drama but I hope this doesn't get commissioned for a series.

will someone give a backgroudn to what we have seen so far and how it fits together?
how does the couple living accross the road to the women that had been abused fit in to the story

and did anyone else jump when the guy slapped the women at the table?

I too have read most of the books and really enjoy them, especially as they are set in North Yorkshire, which is where i grew up.
Not sure about ST as Banks, but willing to give him a go. Just hope they keep it set in North Yorkshire.

Leicester - thanks for that info. Interesting to get the authors views even if I don't fully agree with them. I didn't think ST did too bad a job, I think in places the script wasn't up to scratch and that has to be the fault of the (adaptor?). The affair with the neighbour was I believe uneccesary. I will stick with it though as it will be interesting to see how they handle the twist in the tail which we know is in the book.

As well as Bates's family life one of the drawbacks of starting with one of the later books is missing out on Bates's interaction with his superior Gristhorpe, who is much more interesting than the usual Morse or Frost-style buffoon boss.

hmm - it's interesting how many people whio have read the books don't think ST is right for the role - which poses the question who chose him and why?

still trying to think who would be a good Roy Grace

and going off topic i guess but has anyone read the Anne Cleeves quartet set in the Shetland Isles? (Inspector Perez). I recommend them.

and back to Peter Robinson - a few years ago you were able to email him directly on his website but don't seem to be able to any more.
My son's school in LeeRAB was mentioned in one novel as one the murder victim attended (i get the stories mixed up now having read 19 of them!).
don't enjoy his short stories as much though.

Without giving too much away, and if they stick to the book, the remainder of the story is the aftermath for those involved (and the aftermath of what happened to Lucy in a previous life). Alan Banks has to make sense of all the bodies in the cellar. He investigates the past of Lucy which is a shock let me tell you. Annie Cabbot tries to find out if the police constable used excessive force in arresting Payne. We get to see the effect this has on Cabbot and the constable Janet - and this is cataclysmic. Also the life of the neighbour Maggie across the road who phoned in about the domestic unravels.

I certainly hope it doesn't make another series!! I thought it was pretty dire and can't believe I waited a whole week to see this damp squib of a conclusion.

I was rather expecting the slap but, nonetheless, when it did come it still made me jump!!

Can't see how they fit in yet either but I expect all will become clear (hopefully)!!

I think most "series" are best read in order as you can then follow their development from case to case and when reference is made to previous crimes you know what they are on about. A good way to find the publication order is to google the authors name and then to scroll down to www.fantasticfiction.co.uk. there you can get a list in order of publication with a brief resume of the story.
