Crowquill's Compilation Thread

Why haven't you forced me to listen to these guys before? I definitely like this just as much, if not more than, Belle and Sebastian. Raised By Wolves is a fantastic song.

Patrick Wolf

British singer/songwriter Patrick Wolf's influences are really all over the map, from Bjork, Nico and David Bowie all the way over to folk artists like Vashti Bunyan and Nick Drake he incorporates several elements into his music. Patrick Wolf said he never wanted to be pigeon holed, so i'm not going to try to. He's easily my second favorite artist and at times hes managed to tie for my first.

1. The Libertine
2. Tristan
3. Magpie
4. Ari's Song (Nico)
5. The Gypsy King
6. The Magic Position
7. A Boy Like Me

Belle and Sebastian
belleanRABebastian.jpg

Twee pop band Belle and Sebastian have been compared to The Smiths and Nick Drake (Bryter Layter i'm assuming) and have been called the greatest Scottish band ever (which is true). Fronted by genius Stuart Murdoch they create sexy songs with clever lyrics and before you ask, yes this isn't a good description I just can't write well today.

1. If You Find Yourself Caught In Love
2. The Blues Are Still Blue
3. Lazy Line Painter Jane
4. Get Away From Here, I'm Dying
5. Piazza, New York Catcher
6. The State I Am In
7. She's Losing It
8. If You're Feeling Sinister
9. I Fought In a War

This stuff is really great, I think I've listened through it about three times in a row now. The duel vocals are very pretty. All Apologies.... is probably the best song of the seven, the music is really simple, but fitting, and it's just a lovely song. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Page France
pagefrance.jpg

Indie-folk/pop band Page France create fun songs similar to artists like Iron and Wine but with a much more happy feel akin to The Boy Least Likely To. Lyrically they began to progress by their second album to be much more unique, while the first album had poetic lyrics they seem to have too much of a religious influence on them and on their second and third they're much more similar to their music with songs about getting drunk with jesus, kazoos, cute animals and dancing and stuff.

Also the vocal changes are drastic per album, if you listen to Spine (from their first) and Junkyard (from their second) you'll notice a difference then when you listen to Hat and Rabbit (from their third) you'll notice even more change. I put what album each is from so you know which to check out if you like the track from it.

1. Spine (Come, I'm a Lion!)
2. Junkyard (Hello, Dear Wind)
3. Jesus (Hello, Dear Wind)
4. Hat and Rabbit (...And the Family Telephone)
5. Rhythm (Come, I'm a Lion!)
6. We Remain as Two (Come, I'm a Lion!)

Phil Ochs
philochs.jpg

60s protest singer/folk artists Phil Ochs much like Pete Seeger remains largely under the radar while people are quick to name Bob Dylan and sometimes Woody Guthrie they usually can't go much beyond it despite their being a plethora of folkies around at that time. Phil Ochs wrote alot of songs that would become folk classics, most notable Power and Glory, Outside of a Small Circle of FrienRAB, Love Me I'm a Liberal and I Ain't Marching Anymore.

1. Here's To The State Of Richard Nixon
2. Love Me, I'm a Liberal
3. Outside of a Small Circle of FrienRAB
4. Power and Glory
5. A.M.A. Song
6. That Was the President

Fair enough. I'm glad Atmosphere's on there, not just because it's incredibly beautiful, but also so other people can hear how sharply it contrasts to other tracks.
