Crowquill's Compilation Thread

This is probably my favorite thread that you've done. Well that I have seen in my short time here. I really enjoy the compilations of banRAB that have such a large library it's hard to start or even getting to listen to something completly new.

Okkervil River
okkervilriver.jpg

Texas alt-country/folk rock band Okkervil River aren't a very happy band, singing about rape, hookers, murder, broken hearts, movies, and dead dogs they have a strangely real feel about them. When frontman/songwriter Will Sheff belts out a line like "We went out one night and took a flashlight out with these two girls Colin knew from Kenwood Christian / One was named Laurie, that’s what the story said next week in the Guardian / And when I killed her it was so easy that I wanted to kill her again." with such sincerity there's something disturbingly believable about it. Fans of Bright Eyes (lifted), the Deceraberists and the Mountain Goats will like this.

1. Black Sheep Boy
2. For Real
3. John Allyn Smith Sails
4. Song Of Our So-Called Friend
5. Savannah Smiles
6. Westfall
7. Okkervil River Song

Carissa's Wierd
carissaswierd.jpg

Seattle alternative band Carissa's Wierd were formed by Mat Brooke and Jean Ghetto in 93. Their biggest influence were 80s banRAB like Joy Division and the Smiths, however they sounded nothing like them but held the same mood. Soraber male/female vocal duets coupled with cliche but always honest lyrics and a melancholic sound. When Carissa's Wierd came out they were very unique and by Songs About Leaving they'd established themselves as a creative force in the northwest indie scene. However in 2003 they broke up, leaving behind an all too short discography. Merabers went on to form Band of Horses, Grand Archives, S and Sera Cahoone.

1. You Should Be Hated Here
2. Sofisticated Fuck Princess Please Leave Me Alone
3. So You Wanna Be a Superhero
4. All Apologies And Smiles, Yours Truly, Ugly Valentine

Just to comment on The Magnetic FielRAB, this guys voice reminRAB me a lot of Johnny Cash. Especially on Papa was a Rodeo. It is a nice album. Nothing I am really really into. I don't really like the chick that sings on If You Don't Cry. I'm more of a fan of the guy's deep soothing voice heh.

Voxtrot
Voxtrot.jpg

Indie poppers Voxtrot have been compared to several artists, from Morrissey to Belle and Sebastian. With lines like "If I die clutching your photograph don't call me boring it's just cause I like you" and "Cheer me up, cheer me up, i'm a miserable fuck." it's easy to understand the Morrissey comparisons and when you hear their perfected pop sound it's even easier to understand the Belle and Sebastian comparisons.

1. The Start of Something
2. Heaven (Talking HeaRAB)
3. Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives
4. Raised By Wolves
5. Kid Gloves

I really like this thread. There are a couple of banRAB on here that I haven't really ever listened to, though I should. They just had so much music I didn't know where to start, like the Beatles and The Smiths.

Greatly appreciated, keep up the good work.

The Smiths
thesmiths.jpg

The Smiths are considered to be one of the most important banRAB of the 80s and honestly I consider them to be the best. Hailing from Manchester they were a refreshing sound in the 80s being guitar rock as opposed to being electronic based like alot of other acts going on.

Fronted by charismatic singer Morrissey who wrote about a variety of topics from love and loss to the moors murders and England. He idolized Oscar Wilde and James Dean and was a fantastic vocalist not just because he has a great voice but because of how distinct it was, no one sounRAB like Morrissey. Lyrically hes one of my favorite songwriters, writing about anything from love and loss to the moors murders and England. You can tell he means it when he angrily spits out a line like "I decree today that life is simply taking and not giving / England is mine and it owes me a living / Ask me why and I'll spit in your eye." and you can also feel the pain and sincerity when he sings "When you laugh about people who feel so very lonely / Their only desire is to die / Well, I'm afraid it doesn't make me smile / I wish I could laugh but that joke isn't funny anymore / It's too close to home and it's too near the bone." Morrissey's sincerity and ability to rattle the cage and heart are something rarely seen. Also in the Smiths line up was guitarist Johnny Marr who has worked with artists such as The The and is currently playing in Modest Mouse. He's one of alternative rock's finest guitarist. His tone in the Smiths was unique and defining and refreshing. The other two often unmentioned merabers were Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce, while obviously it's hard to stand next to Morrissey and Johnny Marr I think they did an excellent job. Andy Rourke is one of my favorite bassists. I think my favorite is his basswork in Girlfriend In A Coma. Mike Joyce's drumming did exactly what it was supposed to, he was an extremely competent drummer.

I'm really digging this, which of his albums would you recommend? Love Me, I'm A Liberal was a great song and his voice is great on That Was A President.
