Today Leap Wireless announced that it has expanded the footprint of its Cricket mobile phone services by signing new roaming agreements with 14 other wireless companies. Some of the new markets include: Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Francisco, Calif.; Jacksonville, Miami and Orlando, Fla.; Atlanta, Ga.; Indianapolis, Ind.; Detroit, Mich.; Colurabus, Cleveland and Toledo, Ohio; Dallas, Texas; and Green Bay, Wis. Existing customers who have a $50 or $60 monthly plan can roam into these new areas for free. Customers of other plans can add the expanded roaming coverage to their plan for $5 per month.

i don't think it's roaming...i think it's extended calling area...

metro is doing the same thing...

i believe metro and cricket are sharing towers now so that they can use eachothers markets as expanded areas...

Ckt and Metro have had a "merger". So now they will have a ckt p.e.c. Extended coverage area, ckt is soon to go nationwide....... :goodness:

??? um no.

so anyways... it is roaming, since we are using other carriers networks (not just metro). right now there is no data roaming but sms should work. my understanding is they are trying to get data roaming set up, but it might not be on all the partners etc..

give them some time, i can see nationwide happening. If they are able to use other provider towers now for p.e.c. area now, why not even more so to go national? don't be so quick to dismiss ckt as a national carrier.

Funny, I always thought the reason why cricket had the roaming agreements that they did was because they were at one time owned by Qualcomm and I though that maybe verizon and/or sprint got some deal from them to use there towers in exchange for something.

Perhaps I am just reaching.

From what I have seen this agreement covers Cricket going into Metro coverage and vice versa. I haven't seen anything about some new agreement with Sprint or Verizon. I could be wrong but the map they have shows the country covered in black and labeled 'future coverage'. The Metro areas have a dot over them. It does increase coverage quite a bit for those that travel but doesn't do anything for intercity or suburban/rural coverage.

I could be wrong but I haven't seen anything about true nationwide roaming coverage.

If you have a non triband phone it won't function in the newer AWS markets but the triband phones will operate elsewhere.

MMS is and other data is being tested out, but from what i heard from cricket peeps is that they might now really push it, since they are pushing 3G and for the most part MPCS is not 3G they might not go all out. but i could be wrong, i have already heard that a few people have been able to send MMS in the PEC area of MPCS, now they said it workd to send a few pics but then it stopped working and it was on and off for the time they where in that area. so who knows.

Maybe all the smaller companys should just hook up with Cricket and make a Super Cricket company.

there is and has been for some time nationwide roaming coverage offered through many carriers (including Sprint, Verizon, Alltel, and USCC), but it is not unlimited. both the $50 plan and the $60 plans include some nationwide roaming minutes (30 and 200 respectively) bundled with them.

and yes you may be required to have a tri-band phone in some areas covered by the PEC. I believe the metro markets that require a tri-band phone are Las Vegas, and Philidelphia.

wait until more maps are released. additionally the local coverage mapsshow much more detail, and even creep out away from where the dots would indicate coverage...

Anyone know what 14 companies they're talking about? I could almost guarantee one of them is Pocket Communicating, a fierce competitor in these parts (CricKet plans have more features here due to the competition, for the same money).

What's interesting is that TONS of Oklahoma and other midwest places are covered under PEC. Anyone know of who might be providing service up there?

Thx!

Any word on when they plan to launch in San Francisco? I'm currently in San Diego and will transfer there in Sept. 2009. So I hope I'll be able to keep my Cricket service by then... :D
