Crappy Install = Dim headlights?

I used to have a Rockford amp and a Rockford P1 sub hooked up with a 10 gauge with 30 amp fuse. Nothing went wrong, and I never had my lights dim. I decided to upgrade, so I got a 1000 watt max kenwood amp and 2 12" kenwood 1000watt max kickers. The guy that installed it was super lazy and instead of running a new amp kit he just "tied in" an extra foot of 8 gauge wire to the 10 gauge. He also then put a 40 amp fuse in the fuse holder. Since then my headlights and interior lights dim when my sub hits. Even when it is only on level 2 (sound distorts at 25). Could it be because I need a different amp kit? I am going to get a 4 gauge kit but I dont know what watts I should get with it. I got a new battery, and have my alternator checked and everything is ok. My battery stays at a constant 13.6v - 13.9v whether i have the sub turned up all the way, or all the way off, so I know its not get draining my battery. Could the problem be just because I need a different amp kit?

Long story short, what watts should I get with the 4 gauge amp kit, and would that stop it from dimming? I am going to do the "Big 3" when I get a little more time and money. Thanks for the help!
 
your amp kit is not your problem....My car does the same thing and the only thing i can figure out is the alternator.... Just cause the alternator is working fine doesn't mean anything your amplifier is drawing alot of power and a standerd alternator in a car isn't built for that so what you need is a HIGH OUTPUT ALTERNATOR....

And if you have the money a yellow top battery wouldn't hurt any!!!

4GA is rated at 1000 watt
so 4ga will be fine
you could go to 0 ga to be safer if you want to put more in latter

Get a 4 gauge kit and that should take care of your problem. If it doesn't then the big 3 should for sure.

I don't know what you mean by what watts you should get but as long as it is 4 gauge you should be fine. If you are referring to the wattage rating of the amp kit then it doesn't matter as long as it is more or equal to how much wattage you are running. It will be measured in RMS wattage and not max values.

the watts dont matter in gitting an amp wiring kit. your wire is too small thats why your lights dim. i have rockford fosgate awg 4 gage which has more copper and less rubber on the outside. bestbuy is a good place for a kit or ebay which is cheaper just get one that is awg 4 gage your lights shouldnt dim any or atleast as much
