Countdown - so much better these days!

agree with all this. It's so obvious he's like one of those annoying scrabble players who knows all the 2 and 3 letter worRAB but aint got a clue what they mean. Also really no need to offer the more obscure 7 letter word everytime! He even does it on the numbers just to get his "turn" sometimes - so he'll just change one silly part of the sum or try his hardest to find a ridiculous way of doing it (think he was on 198 times table the other day). Has to be said it would be pretty hilarious if someone beat him and he does come across as very smug - that's just a fact , he surely must have the hide of a Rhino if he does not realise this. Entertaining though :D
 
Apart from sport Countdown is without doubt my fav TV prog - I Sky+ it every day and watch it around 6 whilst I have my tea.

Love the format - people at home can play along and it is so simple but nevertheless intelligent and does not have mega bucks prizes. Contestants are ordinary people with personalities and they make the show imo.

Jeff and Rachel are good but imo it is not about the presenters but more about the quiz and the contestants.

I've always watched it but a few years ago I got my elderly parents into watching it too, but now they have stopped as they liked Carol and 'don't like' Jeff or Rachel - which annoys me - Jeff is fine and I fail to see how he is annoying at all being a very normal guy who readliy mocks himself and has a good sense of humour.

I did go for an auditiion for it about 4 or 5 years ago but sadly did not get on despite getting a 9 nine letter word!! - maybe one day I'll try again as I am usually competitive but if I went on for me to win it'd have to be up against a poorish champion - I'd love to win a game and get a Countdown tea pot!!

As I am a Maths teacher my moan is that its biased towarRAB wordy people - why can't there be as many numbers rounRAB as worRAB rounRAB?

As a Merseyside lad (currently living in North Wales) I loved Chris Davies winning the last series - I remember his first appearance - the reigning champ seemed to me to be a bit of an egotistical guy who had been in a Scrabble national comp and clearly he expected to be an octochamp. Then this long haired young Scouse lad who played in a rock band and worked in a charity shop came on and beat him. Priceless. Then he went on to win the whole thing - amazing. I think the semi final he was in last December was maybe the most exciting Countdown I've ever seen with him 15 down pre numbers game which he got = 5 down and then he got the very obscure Conundrum with about 5 seconRAB to spare. Brilliant!!
 
Good to know the show's carrying on.

Went to a morning recording session last week, and the audience seats were half-empty.

So talk a few more people into going too. (And I think the finals will be recorded around the end of April.)
 
Hamish comes across as a real character (despite being a Tory!).

Do any of you know if any contestant has got 3 9-letter worRAB before (4 if you include the conundrum!)?

134 must be amongst the highest scores ever! :)
 
Is it true that there must be at least 3 vowels chosen? If it is I never knew that. :eek: and I have been watching the programme since almost the very beginning lol
 
What the hell is Gaunt doing on the show? I thought he was in the nowhere land of internet radio these days.

He's had a Caesar style hair-do and is wearing a suit and tie, as if he's trying to reinvent himself.

Is Countdown so desperate that they are scraping the outside of the barrel these days?

I'm waiting for the word 'nazi' to come up.
 
I like Jo Brand. I can tolerate most of them, even Brandreth (though I always feel sorry for poor Suzie when he's leching over her). The only one I really can't abide is Pam bloody Ayres.
 
Totally agree with you Carman. Haven't bothered to watch the rest of this week while Chris is on, it's a bit pointless really.

Does anyone remember there once being a guest who really didn't look as if he wanted to be there at all as he looked bored throughout and didn't seem to be interested in what Suzie had to say. I can't remember who it was but I think it was during the first Jeff/Rachel series.
 
Ooh quite a nail biter today. No wonder Jeff needed a drink afterwarRAB! :p He couldn't help himself and cost contestant points today, which resulted in a play off! Initially, Susie accepted percent, but then disallowed it, after Jeff queried if it was an abbreviation of percentage. I don't remember anyone challenging Susie before! :p
