Could I fly on the Orion spacecraft and be the first person on Mars?

I'm 14 and I LOVE space and I found out today about the Orion spacecraft, and I want to be on it when it launches in 2020, but people think I won't be able to because it's too soon and stuff..
Would it be in any way possible to train enough and everything by that time?

The key, first, is to become an astronaut. Set your sights on that for now, since if you don't become an astronaut you'll never go to Mars--not on one of our early expeditions anyway. I would start with NASA's Web site. Look over what they have to say, and write to them--they get queries all the time from kids who are interested in becoming astronauts someday.

And if you aren't the first to get to Mars, maybe you'd be on one of our first expeditions. Or maybe you'd become part of making it all happen--you might find your calling is in Mission Control or something. Or, you might find yourself manning the Moon Base--that'd be exciting too. Or, you might at least perform missions in Earth orbit--even if we never go to Mars or back to the Moon. That'd still be exciting. I envy you if you even get to perform one orbital mission. ;)

I think you have to start making money.
it will cost you about 1 million pounds to go into space.

I think that you are confusing the Orion capsule currently being developed to replace the shuttle with the nuclear powered Orion spacecraft theorised back in the 50s. The former would not be able to get you to Mars (not on it's own, anyway), the latter only ever existed on a drawing board.

Let's see....you'll be 18 in 2013....you'll need a degree in something science-based, which will take you to 2016, but...

...the Orion is a NASA spacecraft, and to be a NASA astronaut, you have to have US nationality.

Perhaps you could do your degree in America and gain nationality that way? However, you should check how long you need to live in America for before you can apply.

Have a look at this link for more info:

Good luck little man and hope you see the stars closeup some day!!
