Contacts swapped but cant use//HELP!!!

ok i bought the htc droid from verizon yesterday and i got my contacts swapped through my g-mail but i cant call or message any of them please help. this is my first smart phone so im still learning. if its the wrong thread im truly sorry i just need some help. also what apps should i install for better performance?

Hi there, and welcome to the Android Community.

Can you clarify what the problem is? There is no such phone as the HTC Droid. Did you mean Motorola Droid? If not - which phone do you mean?

When you say your contacts are swapped through GMail - what do you mean by this? Do you have your contacts visible in your GMail account that you use for your phone? Do they have phone numbers associated with them?

There aren't any apps that can improve the performance of your phone - that would require a custom ROM. However, there are lots of apps that can improve the experience of the phone. There are a number of threads on here asking people to name their top 10 apps or whatever - I'd have a search around for those.

Hi

Can you see the contacts in the "Contacts" application on the phone? If you see them, but still you can't dial those numbers, check if they are entered in the "notes" section of the contacts.

Over a month ago, my phone was in for a repair, when I got back the phone, it was wiped from the data. After synchronizing with Gmail, all the numbers were in the "notes" of each contact. I've had "MyBackup" application but it was in trial period, so I had to manually enter all the numbers.

I hope that you'll find an easy solution.

thats the exact problem. the numbers all show up as notes and i cant use them to make a call or txt message. sorry if i got the phone wrong. i looked through a bunch of threads to find a solution and i saw so many phones i got confused and my phone is not a motorolla it is a HTC. so i download the my contacts app to solve it?

If you mean "My Backup", it won't solve it unless you'd already downloaded it and made a backup of your contacts before all the numbers ended up in the notes section.

If you log into your GMail account using your computer (not your phone), and go to the Contacts link, and look at some of your contacts. Are the numbers in the "Notes" box? Or are they in one of the phone number boxes? If you can tell me this I can give you a way to fix it.

Android will only call or text to contacts with numbers, so it doesn't list any that doesn't have at least one number entered. As they're entered as Notes you will not see your contacts when trying to call/text

The easiest, safest, but longest way to fix this is to go to your GMail account using your PC's browser, go to Contacts, and simply cut and paste the Notes entry for every one of your contacts into one of the phone number boxes, then save it. When your phone next syncs all the changes will appear on your phone.

If you're comfortable hacking stuff, a quicker way would be to click Export, select Everyone, select Google CSV, click the Export button, save the file somewhere. You now have all of your contacts exported into a CSV file. From here you can try one of two things...

Either, rename it to a .txt file, import it into Excel (it's important to import it as text or it'll treat the phone numbers as actual numbers and trim off any 0s at the start), set each column to Text format, and import it. Then cut the data under the Notes column and paste it into the column named "Phone 1 - Value". Save the file as CSV format and give it a new name.

Or, you could try opening the file in Notepad, finding the word "Notes" on the first line, deleting the word "Notes" and swapping it for "Phone 1 - Value". Then finding the word "Phone 1 - Value" further along that line, deleting it, and replacing it with the word "Notes". I've never tried this, but it might work.

Once you've saved the above CSV file, you should then be able to delete all of your contacts in GMail, and import them again from your modified CSV file using the Import option on GMail (it was next to the Export link).

Good luck! Let us know how you get on.

to be honest im not that computer savvy so i went the long way and copied and pasted. sorry i couldnt try your way. i just had alot of hope that there was a quick fix but i guess not thanks for the help
