Do believe that his context was sarcasm.

As in, the gas station in the 'burbs don't raise their prices by $0.15 to match the prices of the station downtown.

So, we have the President who says that BP will be footing the bill. However, a tax increase is need to cover up front costs.

We have the Majority leader saying that the taxpayers will not be paying for the cleanup. Yet, the tax increased proposed in the bill affect ALL oil companies, not just BP. Do they think that this increase in taxes will not effect the cost at the pump?

Finally, we have a poorly written bill that will increase the deficit (surprise!!) with no analysis as to what it will actually do.

Fantastic.

I don't think you were, since in the post you responded to I pointed out that the tax affects everyone while a company raising it's prices only affects self selected customers of that company.

That's why I wrote "tax statement = higher prices" and "company raises prices = maybe, maybe not higher prices".

Your context was that if one companies raises their prices (due to what ever external or internal influences) you can take your business else where if you so choose to do so. I was pointing out that the external influence is the same for each company in this case. Which is in line with your statement.

Thus, I was "with you" from the beginning.

If we're going to continue drilling in federal waters, then I see nothing wrong with putting a fund like this together. Accidents happen, but if the same accident happens twice and we're not prepared again, then shame on us. Offshore accidents have the potential to bankrupt a company, we need a fail safe in case that happens.

The worry is the cost being offset to citizens like you and me. BP should have to pay for these types of disasters, not us. How do we guarantee BP is paying for it and not recouping the costs through us?

communism for the win!!!

Well, we already own Freddie, Fanny, GM, and Dodge, might as well take over the oil industry too

you WILL pay for it one way or another...either higher taxes, or higher prices

this new oil tax will mean a penny or two per gallon
