Congress to quadruple tax on oil, tax to help finance cleanups

Yeah, and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA) run by the government was such a raging success.

See: Superfund

BTW, after the Exxon accident, a law was passed and measures were SUPPOSED to be put in place to help with clean up. Even though the Feds passed the law, they didn't follow it and that is why it took so long to gather some of the materials needed to do what tiny bit they are doing now.

I for one sit in anticipation for gas prices to rise. Thank you short sighted big government

Great! BP fucks up, Obama does nothing to help, and we foot the bill.

Had this been GWB, the Libertards would have been all over this.

Not necessarily.

If the government taxes me I'll pay for it. Higher taxes.

If BP raises their costs I may choose to pay for it, or I may choose to buy from a competitor with lower prices or a better environmental record. Maybe higher prices, maybe not.

See, that's how a market works, and that's why "free" markets provide more liberty than government fiat. In theory.

In exchange for service.

Cleanup should come out of their profit margin, not added on top of it.

you'd be silly to think that competitors will not raise their prices to match BP's if they do.
everyone is milking this

Except that all of the oil companies, domestic and foreign, will have the tax leveed against them. Not just BP.

So, how does everyone increases their prices work into your plan?

how is government big in this case. This big government thing comes off like a boogey man to me.

govt apparently let BP (a private business) operate how they saw fit. In fact its hard to see how big gov't interceded at all in any of this.

as far as imposing taxes...did you really think the american tax payer wasn't going to be affected in some way..really?

really? you really think you are going to avoid filling up your gas tank, never change oil in your car, not use plastics?

no, no you aren't. you have no options. oil prices will go up to pay for the cleanup, and you will have no choice but to pay for it.

you clearly have no clue how macroeconomics works, which is the very reason you are a nobody lashing out behind a keyboard, but will open up your wallet like a bitch and pay the oil man

it looks like you are getting slapped around in this thread. i suggest you stop posting, and learn from posters who know what they are talking about.

It's good to know my tax money being used to clean up the oil spill will also be used to help pay for Obamacare.

Sure they would.

Just like Wal~Mart raises it's prices to match Sears... oh... wait....

Airlines sometimes match prices, sometimes not.

Cab companies sometimes match prices, sometimes not.

Auto dealers sometimes match prices, sometimes not.

Convenience store fuel dispensers sometimes match prices, sometimes not.

So, uh, maybe it would happen, maybe not. Either way, I prefer market forces to governmental "regulation".

No, I would never expect the government to waste a crisis. They always take these opportunities to expand their powers.

Try to stay with me here-

If the government levies taxes, all prices will go up.

If the government stays out of it, the cost (not price, cost) of oil stays the same for all competitors and only BP has to raise prices to pay for cleanup, maybe retail prices rise, maybe they don't.

Are you still with me?
