Donovan - Mellow Yellow
Year: 1967

Yes, with a title song about a vibrator and nine other songs that just pleasantly meander without really going anywhere you have to ask, why did this make the list? Well, it's firstly Donovan's most consitent effort, and it's also quite brilliant. It's amazing that someone can make music with such lovely soft, mellow sounRABcapes and yet only really be acclaimed by the hipsters of the world. Where is the pop appreciation? This is more than just a pleasant experience, it is a really solid album that makes a lot of good points, and it is a musical experience that you really would be better off having heard. Listen to it while toking up or just wanting to mellow out.

3 Choice Tracks: Mellow Yellow, Bleak City Woman, Hampstead Incident

Been keeping track of this for a while, hope the quality of music stays consistent through all 1001 albums, good luck with that. Oh, and I listened to the lyrics to First Utterance with it after I felt I soaked-up the music enough- and Ive come to the conclusion that your screen name is seriously fucked-up and First Utterance is twisted.

Can - Ege Bamyasi
Year: 1972

This is some great krautrock, well it's more pop than anything, but it's by far the most focused effort from Can. This is a great relaxing effort, it's lush sounRABcapes and sweeping motions let the album lead you through from start to finish. It's definitely a very interesting album, there's always something new to find, and it's always satisfying when you do find something new. Listen to it when you want to chill out, or just reflect.

3 Choice Tracks: Sing Swan Song, Soup, Spoon

Il Balletto Di Bronzo - Ys
Year: 1972

I'm sorry I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome this is. Imagine if ELP had the capacity to make captivating music. You know, with some awesome guitars, a truly great drummer, keyboardist coupled with great songwriting skills. This is basically what you get with this Album, a lot of people are quick to dismiss it as derivative, but I just don't hear it. Even now this sounRAB completely original and suprisingly fresh. It's safe to say this has aged better than a lot of it's contemporaries. This is one to listen to when you want to hear something really interesting.

3 Choice Tracks: 5 track album, all are really good, and you'll probably find the whole album before you'll find individual tracks.

Album 999

Captain_Beefheart_-_Lick_My_Decals_Off%2C_Baby.jpg

Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band - Lick My Decals Off, Baby
Year: 1970

Very often overlooked in favour of Trout Mask Replica as the "one" Captain Beefheart album people get. This slightly toned down version of Beefheart's genius sings to me. It is early avant-garde at its best and it really helped shape and define the era moreso than TMR did. The humour, while Zappa-esque in stature is far less straight forward than Zappa ever did, and it focuses far more on simply being weird. Weird for the sake of being weird possibly, but this is the start of the 70's everyone was doing it, just in slightly less obvious ways. The vocal performance is actually quite stunning if you give an intent listen, and so are the instrumentals, put this album on loop, and let it play twice and listen to every note and every piece of lyric, you will be very well rewarded.

3 Choice Tracks: Bellerin'Plain, I Wanna Find a Woman That'll Hold My Big Toe Till I Have To Go, The ClouRAB are Full of Wine (Not Whiskey or Rye)

Bathory - Blood Fire Death
Year: 1988

This is a landmark album when it comes to extreme metal, and for that alone it's well worth a listen. This album marked a turning point between quick, harsh and fast songs, and started shifting towarRAB long, epic arrangements. It's a landmark in both Viking and Black metal and yet another shift in sound for Bathory. As a result of this album, and the follow up Hammerheart the underground extreme metal scene in Scandinavia would change forever. Not only that, but it's an incredibly great album, very interesting and very heavy, even by todays standarRAB. You'll love the riRAB and the stripped down raw production (even if it is good by Bathory's 80's standarRAB). This is one to listen to if you're in the mood for an 80's album that gives a glimpse into the 90's future.

3 Choice Tracks: A Fine Day to Die, Dies Irae, Blood Fire Death

Very nice thread, Comus. Some stuff I already like and some stuff I'll need to check out. You inspired me to bring Camel's Moonmadness to work today.

Nice review, this is a good album. I work with a guy who keeps playing it just about every night at the moment. I do like it but TBH would rather listen to other saxophonists such as Stan Getz or Bud Shank.
Perhaps I dont appreciate John Coltrane as much as I should.
Other good albums by him (which i kind of prefer) are 'Giant Steps' (1960) & 'Interstellar Space' (1969).

Wishbone Ash - Argus
Year: 1972

I'm amazed and appalled that this album wasn't included in the original 1001 list. But then again I'm sure it's far less important or groundbreaking than 50 cent. This is one of my all time favourite albums, everything about it is just so perfect. The dueling guitars, the massively tight rhythm section, everythign just works so well. On first listen this should just amaze you from the get go. The guitar work of Ted Turner and Andy Powell really shines on this album, not to mention the catchy vocal harmonies and complex arrangements. This is one to listen to if you're in the mood for some epic guitars.

3 Choice Tracks: Time Was, The King Will Come, Throw Down the Sword

The Sonics - Boom
Year: 1966

This is filthy, garage rock at it's best. It's dirty, it's heavy it's full of energy and a significant portion of the songs are covers. It makes you feel like, with little talent and a few instruments, you to can make a great album. Hailing from the fine state of Washington that also gave us our previous album it's this garage rock movement that eventually set the scene for grunge some 20 odd years later. This album makes for an incredible listen, if just to see how little garage rock has changed over the years. This album is one to listen to just before you get bathed, the dirt can be quickly disposed of and then you can enjoy your day with memories of this great music.

3 Choice Tracks: Cinderella, He's Waitin', Shot Down

Album 995

Mad010.jpg

The Mad Capsule Markets - 010
Year: 2001

Yes, the year is the Japanese release. This album is so amazingly full of win that it's hard to describe. It's digital hardcore, or whatever the hell you want to classify it as. Either way it's catchy, different, heavy and just batshit insane at the same time. Nothing on this album is natural, but why should it be? Even though this album is a bit more accessible than their other albums it's still incredibly far off the wall. You wouldn't find stuff like this on the original list, because they were playing it way too safe. Why make a list about 1001 albums you have to listen to, when they're all going to sound the same. This album, and the whole band is just so different everyone has to give them at least a try, they'll be richer for it. Anyways great band and great album.

3 Choice Tracks: Gaga Life, Kumo, Fly High
