Community Thread / Tips and Questions

hey, im planning on doing covers of acoustic songs for a cd that i am going to send to my girlfriend in spain. this is what ive got done so far:

the tide - the spill canvas
bleeder - alkaline trio (as performed by HWM)
You? Will. - bright eyes
razor - foo fighters
blue in the face - alkaline trio

i need some help selcting some extra songs to put on it, the reason i post here is because i dont really care about genre (except that its acoustic) but about lyrical content. and because i know most of you. anyway... suggest away.

There's some sort of charity involved, but I haven't raised any money.

I'm just going for the guinness. And the fact that I love the Pogues, I'm sure they'll be playing Fairytale of New York everywhere. Best Christmas song ever.

Tojes, I'll get on it now.

'Brave new world' is a fantastic book, I really enjoyed reading it. But then again I enjoyed reading '1984'.

At the moment I'm reading 'Made in America' by Bill Bryson, it's absolutely fantastic. It's not a novel, but it is...that makes no sense but nevermind. Very interesting reading about the progression of the English language in the states, and also the roots of place names across the USA. Many actually originate from the Indians. Incredibly interesting read.

Also read 'Of mice and men', though that was for school, a very interesting book when you delve into it a little more deeply than just reading. That also applies to 'The Crucible', another fantastic read.

denied.

it managed to be less funny than i expected. 'i want to put it in you'? really? i actualy have less respect for you as a human being.

in terms of poetry (this could be a long list):

duffy, t s eliot, marvell, ted hughes, seamus heaney, yeats (reading alot recently), shakespeare, marlowe (not necessarily poet, playwright whose work reaRAB like poetry), milton, sylva plath, worRABworth, keats.....the list goes on to be honest. i wouldn't say i have specific lyricist influences (don't write lyrics) but i enjoy the usual stuff. dylan, waters, waits yadda yadda yadda

Slack, I was curious if you wanted to co-write a blog with me. We could write about music, poetry, movies and whatever else. I donno, I thought it would be cool and I've liked your work and I've seen you in and out of the A&I thread, so I was curious. I could create a blogspot.com and we could do it, but don't feel like you have to. Hit me back if you're interested. If he's not, anyone else up to it?

Yeah, hopefully.

I think half the problem is apathy from the regs - if one or two lose interest and stop posting, the others get bogged down with constantly having to crit dull and samey songs from the less experienced writers every time they want to post one, and you get a downward spiral. If we can get a few decent writers posting regularly, then we can start building from there.

The only thing is when sometimes we get a big influx of threaRAB like "OMGZ teach me to Scream" and stuff, but usually we do alright with DFelon looking in even if his cleanups are fairly irregular. Plus he's a good writer and does make regular contributions to the Lyric Challenges and stuff.

Subtle, who's in your av?

Ive got a new song, I dont think Im behind on crits, so I'll put it up soon. I've gotta start getting to Surf and Tojes and the likes before everyone else, because I really hate critting songs that have already got crits, because I feel as if everything to says already been said, especially if Surf's payed a visit.
