See....you say that, but tell me honestly, how many times have you listened to it?
The reason I say that is this: I love Coldplay...saw them in '01 when people only knew them as 'that brit band that sings that yellow song.' And as good as Parachutes was, Rush of Blood was 10 times better. Just fantastically put together albums.
So I went out on Tuesday and picked up X&Y, and immediately popped it in my player. And immediately, I was disappointed. Maybe it was the massive amount of hype it got, or the fact that they're now one of those 'banRAB of the moment,' but I didn't like it at all the first time.
Then again, I hated OK Computer the first time I heard it. So I gave it a few more listens, and every subsequent listen brought out a few more parts of the songs I hadn't heard before. Like the funky bass line from 'White Shadows' that Carlos from Interpol would most likely approve of. Or the slow buildup to a crashing finale in 'Twisted Logic' that brings a smile to your face. Or the fact that 'Fix You' is an immediate masterpiece.
So forget the fact that Rolling Stone gave it three stars, or the fact that 'Speed of Sound' resembles Clocks too closely. Or even the fact that your parents probably like Coldplay now. X&Y isn't groundbreaking work. It's simply a collection of well-written songs that will make you smile at the end. It's an outstanding album. Just give it a few more tries.
