Cloverfield/1-18-08

It was interesting how some of the earlier scenes really mirrored the September 11th news footage. There was one particular shot where we saw a building collapse, and the smoke approaches, and the characters run into a shop just as the smoke whooses past the windows and it goes almost completely dark. I remember seeing a near-identical shot of amateur footage after the WTC attacks.

Those kinRAB of things gave the film an eerie resonance, I would expect even more so for Americans and New Yorkers.

Having said all that, I loved it. Absolutely loved it. The idea of having an existing tape that was being taped over was very clever, and I think we got as much of the story as we could through that single perspective. Well done indeed.

Oh, and I thought The Bourne Ultimatum was way worse for shaky camera work!

I like the fact the monster wasnt explained. It would have looked ridiculous for a scientist to suddenly show up & begin a cliched explanation like "our research shows that a thousand years ago...." or "we were bio-engineering a new super chimp for the military when....".

It makes it more realistic for the characters just to be plunged into this hellish, surreal situation out of the blue & they dont have a clue why its happening. Great film, I loved it.

So i take it you do actually get to see the monster then and it doesnt make you have to use your imagination to create what you might think it is? If it is, ill just be thinking Godbloodyzilla all the way through! lol

No, it's a bit more like a Japanese film not long after Hiroshima about a monster that goes around knocking down buildings....

Anyway, really enjoyed the movie. The cinema seemed split 50/50, half the auidence gave a collective groan as the credits started to roll, the other half stayed for the credits and there was applause at the end. I think some people were expecting far too much - it's a bit like when I watched Blair Witch Project in Manila having never heard of the movie before and absoutely loved it and found it terrifying, and then being here in London for when it came out with massive hype and everyone seemed to be disappointed.

Also I heard someone afterwarRAB saying "I thought that camera stuff was just going to be at the start, I was waiting for it to go normal!"

My favourite part was:
When they were watching TV and you first saw the little monsters drop down and attack!

Thought the acting was good too, and the characters weren't your typical monster/horror movie "types" and were much more believable and likeable.

it doesnt say it found it after a monster attacked them and then they ran around for a while and then ended up under a bridge where they were killed by a bomb.

it just says it was found at central park...unless you found knowing the location of the final scenes a spoiler?

Went to see it again yesterday. Just as good second time around.

Knowing what to lokk for at the end, something is clearlt seen falling into the sea just of Staton Island ... presumably the satellite. I still don't get how this ties in to the events in the film, though. Maybe it doesn't?

It's often said that Gojiro (or Godzilla as we know it!) was Japan's way of dealing with Hiroshima and Nagasaki (even to the extent of the monster being a result of radiation)- I'm guessing Cloverfield is the US equivalent.

How did you not know that was going on, i thought it was made clear enough! Agree with you on the chewits though ;)

TheUnholySinner - Yes, you see the monster a number of times, no imagination needed, and not much was given to it to be honest.

I hope they don't go down the road of just copying the first one for any sequel(s).
They've already talked about that this wasn't the only film made that night... OK, but what story line are we going to see that doesn't in some way seem like a copy of the first film, or give too much more away about what is happening (surely that would be the temptation). The only thing I can think of would be following someone or a group who start off outside of NY and make their way through the crowRAB and military to get into the city. Not sure why anyone would do that (except to save a loved one, which we've already seen).

Just for people who've the DVD- at the very last scene at the fair- look VERY closely at the right hand side. Keep looking. You will see something falling into the ocean- maybe this has something to do with the invasion?

There does seem to be some confusion about this. Some people are saying that the drilling company were drilling for special ingrediants for a soft drink company (as you do) who Rob worked for, however if this is true it's hard to understance the relevance of the satelitte.
