Not if you have a decent home cinema setup its not.
Although its quite easy to add chatter from behind,crisp packets rustling,mobiles ringing,queueing up to get in and other cinema "exclusives".
And it may be cheaper for a single entry,but a family of four is very unlikley to gain entry for less than the price of a dvd.
When I visited the cinema in the 70's/80's the screens were massive and the visit was worthwhile,it was an event , as indeed it still is in places like the Odeon Leicester Square,
but in the modern multiplexes screensize looks only slightly larger than a BIG tv
