Great thread, I love to watch classic movies especially black & white movies. Some of my favorites are all of Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, and James Dean's movies. Other movies are Gone With the Wind (all time greatest romance movie), Casablanca, Thunder Road, The Godfather movies are classics too, the old Dracula movies, and Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte starring Bette Davis.

What's You Can't Take It With You about? I can't remember! And I haven't seen Gone With The Wind before - yes, I know, how could I have not? But as recently I've found that my school library has an insane amount of movies (in particular classics) I'll get around to Gone With The Wind eventually.
I did watch Sunset Bvld last evening though, while waiting for the person who borrowed a video I needed for my assignment to finish. I've always wanted to see Sunset Bvld because I've heard about how good it is, so I'm so glad I finally got around to seeing it. It's incredible. It's so dark and is quite cruel about its subject matter but it's just done so well and Gloria Swanson was incredible. Her transformation, it was riveting, unforgettable. Plus the backstory to the movie - I don't think I've ever seen a movie where the actors' lives were as close to that in the characters they play. I highly recommend it to everyone.

Ooh I watched All About Eve last night, and wow, seriously - it's just flat-out amazing. It's sly and clever and funny and dark and the acting is just top notch. Bette Davis had never been better, I think, and Anne Baxter was great as well. The story is the best part about it though, it's sharp and witty even though it's so dark. It's truly one of the great classics.
The Philadelphia Story and Rear Window were both excellent but if I start I'll never stop, so I'll end here now.

Run, do not walk, to your nearest Rental Shop and rent or buy a fred/ginger movie...they are the best.

I saw Gone With the Wind last week and it was AMAZING! The ending was so sad. I felt bad for Rhett, even though I never did like him too much.

A couple movies I've only just recently seen are Dodsworth, A Family Affair (the first of the Hardy movies), and You Can't Take It With You. Dodsworth was pretty good with great performances. I like the Andy Hardy movies for the father role because he always gives the greatest advice but I have never liked Mickey Rooney very much. A Family Affair was the first of the series and is the only one where Lionel Barrymore (who I adore) plays Judge Hardy. It was pretty good but I think I like the ones with Judy Garland, and the one with Donna Reed best. You Can't Take It With You was a little crazy at times but I just loved it. I've always loved Capra films (I am actually sort of related to him by my step-father) and this is one of my new favorites. The message was a really good one that people should take to heart today more often.

Congratulations! I'd have to say that my most favourite Hitchcock movie is Vertigo though, but Psycho is probably his most popular/famous. I haven't seen The 39 Steps, let us know how it is! And Wild Strawberries too.
I wish I had a classic movies class! The closest is film art, which I'm doing, but that's only a semi-classics class because the lecturer is showing some classic movies. Not all though, but some quite famous ones: Greed, Citizen Kane, Psycho, 2001: A Space Odyssey, His Girl Friday.

All about Eve is one hell of a movie and one of my favourites. Seriously, Bette Davis kicks ass! Metropolis, Gilda, Rear Window, The Philadelphia Story (and the list goes on) are also fantastic classics.

I took a classic movies course in Unviersity just for fun. I loved Harvey with Jimmy Stewart and On the Water front. Man Brando was amazing in that movie. Adams Rib with Hepburn and Tracey is one of my all time favorites. That I remeber on TV years ago. There are just so many great movies.
My favorite Grace Kelly movie, although Rear Window was good, was The Country Girl with Bing Crosby. That was amazing.

Too many movies to watch... damn the lot of you! Just when I promised myself I would stop buying/renting DVDs 
All About Eve is great! It's clever and Bette Davis was excellent. To think people thought she was washed up, tsk. And I need to see Sunset Boulevard... I've heard it's insanely good as well, but more depressing. And also It Happened One Night, I've heard that Frank Capra doesn't quite know how to end movies but I really enjoyed Mr Smith Goes to Washington so I'll look out for that one.
Do you know, I've never seen a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movie! I have seen Gene Kelly/Frank Sinatra collaborations though, and I really loved On the Town and Take Me Out To The Ball Game.
About Audrey Hepburn, I don't actually love her like everybody else (although Breakfast at Tiffany's was a lot better on second viewing, Funny Face as well). I'll look out for Paris When It Sizzles though. And taovande, a lot of times classic movies (the ones we deem classics anyway) do badly when they're first released... Vertigo is a good example. Sometimes I think some movies need several viewings, so maybe the first time around it's underwhelming. I don't know. And affairs - I don't know.

James and Audrey are my favorite actors of all time.
The books I've read about Audrey have said that their (she and Holden) affair was never confirmed from the Sabrina years (Several close friends have said it was never sexual) and he was an alcoholic and had a vasectomy and she desperately wanted children so that was a turn off to the relationship.
They definitely weren't having an affair during the shooting of Paris when it sizzles.
I'm also surprised it received such awful reviews and was shelved for a few years before it was released. I found it charming and wonderful.

I love the Sound of Music,My Fair Lady, A Street Car Named Desire, and To Kill A Mockingbird.
One of my favorite films ever is All About Eve. I thought Bette Davis and Anne Baxter were just great in this film.
I also love many of the Shirley Temple movies including Heidi and the Little Princess.

Guys, I am so happy because I just recently bought Wild Strawberries (Bergman) and 39 Steps by Hitchcock! These will be the first movies that I'll see from these acclaimed directors (haven't watched Psycho yet). Anyway, I just wanted to share

I was heartbroken by James Dean's acting when I saw this movie. It's so emotional and truthful! Anybody who has ever had a problem feeling accepted by their parents can see themselves in him with this role. It's sorta the same thing with Rebel too. In that one his parents are very loving but they are scared of facing their problems and their son's problems and keep running away from everything. His dad isn't a figure that he can look up to and be proud of. When Jim yells "You're tearing me apart!" it is so moving and you really feel what he is feeling too.

Here to bump up the thread, and I'll be sure to look for those Fred/Ginger movies when I see them!
Saw Greed (Eric von Stroheim) for film class on Monday - the 2 hour 20 minute version. It was slow, especially in the beginning, but even in its butchered form it's still very compelling stuff. It was my first silent movie and surprisingly not that boring... couldn't tear my eyes away from the screen towards the end even though I was feeling uncomfortable in my seat in the lecture theatre. Great story of how greed ruined the three lives of Tricia, McTeague and Marcus, but there was also a good score and very nice lighting/misc en scene stuff. I'd recommend it, actually, if you want to watch something a little bit older.

I have the box set for Fred and Ginger too. For a great example of what they do best watch Top Hat. For something a little more story oriented and lighter on the dancing you should watch Story of Vernon and Irene Castle. They were such magic!

I LOVE Dennis Morgan! My grandma actually named her eldest son (my uncle) after him because he was her heartthrob lol.
