Classic Movies Thread

I highly recommend My Favorite Wife. It's perdy funny! It's the story of a man (Cary Grant) and a woman (Irene Dunne) who are inadvertently separated because he thinks she's been dead all these years. Turns out she's been shipwrecked for the past 7 years on some remote island. Well, just as she finds her way back, her husband (if I recall correctly) is about to marry someone else. I think Later on, he finds out she wasn't alone on that island, she was living there with some hunky Tarzan-lookalike and he's totally jealous because he made such a stink about moving on with their lives (separately) and now it appears that she's dating that guy she was shipwrecked with (or shacking up with him, I can't remember). Anyway, check it out. It's a cute romantic-comedy. :blush:

I guess it would be a matter of opinion if the JD stuff is good or not. :look:

East of Eden is based on the John Steinbeck novel of the same name. It's the story of two brothers, Cal and Aaron, loosely based on the Biblical brothers, Cain and Abel. There's a rivalry between them and Cal (James Dean) always feels like he comes up short, compared to his brother (Aron is dad's favorite). Nothing he does, no successes he's accomplished, seems to be good enough for dear old dad.

Anyway, I don't wanna give too much away. I guess I liked the movie cuz I liked the book. I think the book is better, but I like James Dean so I gave it a shot. :blush:

Gosh! To be honest, I can't remember now what happened in Rebel Without A Cause! :eek: I just know that I liked it when I first saw it. :lol:
 
I like James Dean's movies but they aren't my favorite. He was such a tremendous talent, that it is so sad he never made any more movies. His scenes in Giant with Elizabeth Taylor are some of my favorites....so beautiful!

Paris When It Sizzles is really cute! I don't like some of the weird scenes where they are acting out the script, but the ones with just Audrey and Bill Holden in that room together are wonderful. They had great chemistry and it makes it even more interesting to watch when you know that they were in love at one time. In fact, Holden called Audrey the love of his life.

The more I watch Streetcar Named Desire, the more I love it. I remember I was little when I first saw it and didn't understand anything lol. Marlon's raw sexuality is so different from any male character that came before, that I can just imagine how much this movie shook up Hollywood.

I also have a great love for Fred Astaire, especially with Ginger Rogers. The plots are pretty silly, a lot of times, but their chemistry, their humor, and of course their dancing make them so worthwhile anyway.

Sunset Boulevard is another great movie. William Holden is so good in his part! I love Billy Wilder movies in general. The Apartment is another must see!

The Heiress is about a girl (Olivia De Havilland) who isn't very pretty but has a great fortune waiting for her when her overprotective and cruel father dies. She is lead to believe that nobody will ever love her for her, until she meets a handsome man played by the great Montgomery Clift.
 
Two for the Road is excellent!

As for Fred/Ginger movies........Swing Time, Shall We Dance, Top Hat---I own a collectors edition box set---those three were my favorites.
 
One of my all time favorites is A Streetcar named desire. Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh were both so amazing in this.

Another I love is Gone with the Wind. I loved the chemirsty bewteen Rhett and SCarlett

If you are looking for another good Hitchcock movie, then two I would suggest are Notorious (Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman with Claude Raines as a really really good sympathetic bad guy) and Rebecca. Rebecca was the first movie he made in the states and gets overlooked sometimes. A lot of people love Suspicion and I do enjoy it, but I think that Rebecca is even better imo. I've never seen Rope, but I really want to and I actually have it TiVo-ed right now so I will soon. Shop Around the Corner is one of my favorites too. Jimmy Stewart is always wonderful.

Have you ever seen It Happened One Night? It's a great one to watch when you are just getting into old movies. If you like Philadelphia Story and romantic screwballs like that, then you might like it.

Another movie I really love but I've only seen twice (I'm definitely due for another viewing) is The Heiress. It really breaks your heart.
 
It Happened One Night is one of my favorite movies. It's hilarious and romantic. The chemistry is perfect for a movie like this. This is the movie I used to get my sister hooked on classic movies.

I literally just finished Paris, When it Sizzles and wow. What a fantastic movie. It's funny and romantic. Audrey Hepburn is too adorable for words in this movie. William Holden is perfect as well.
My sister is a budding screenwriter so it was perfect for her to watch. A very clever screenplay, perfectly directed. Just plain fun!

Really? I'll watch those then. Thanks! There are so many Hitchcock movies I don't know where to begin, so thanks very much :hug: Yes, do see Rope. I like it. It's different, but it still has the Hitchcock sense of style. And like I said the long takes are brilliant.

No, I haven't seen It Happened One Night! I really want to. That and Bringing Up Baby for screwball comedies and Sunset Blvd because I've heard that's really good too. Yeah Jimmy Stweart = :love: He's just got this aww-shucks thing that makes you love him.

What's The Heiress about? And I haven't seen a lot of the stuff you've mentioned SMUSH, but how's the James Dean stuff? Is it really that good? I don't know if they're classics either :shrug: not really sure what 'classic' means but it probably refers to the time period, you know, Old Hollywood (although of course there were a lot of good foreign stuff during the '40s, '50s etc).
 
Is the Rocky Horror Picture Show considered a classic? I love that one. I also thought Carnival of Souls was pretty good.

I haven't seen a lot of the classics (like Casablanca or Rear Window) but I do like some of the movies that have been listed such as Psycho, Gone With The Wind, Wizard of Oz, Rebecca. The last one is also my favorite book! :blush:

I also like Love Affair (with Irene Dunne, not Annette Bening), My Favorite Wife (Irene Dunne/Cary Grant), Anna and the King of Siam, The King and I, An Affair to Remember, From Here to Eternity, Singing in the Rain, Love Story, Mommie Dearest, Sound of Music, Splendor in the Grass, The Outsiders, West Side Story, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, East of Eden, Rebel Without A Cause.

I don't know if they're all considered "classics", but they're pretty timeless to me! :D
 
Rear Window! Yeah, first Hitchcock movie I saw and was captured immediately. I was surprised by how funny it was, and the suspense is first-rate.

I saw The Shop Around The Corner and Rope yesterday, both were very good. TSATC is amazing. I like You've Got Mail but somehow this is better - it's the combination of Margaret Sullavan and Jimmy Stewart, really. The last scene? Amazing. Immediately after the movie ended I went back and watched that last scene again :love: it's just such a great movie.

And Rope - kind of experimental but I don't think it failed like what Hitch says. I thought it was pretty good! And I loved the long takes.
 
Did you know, I was just thinking of creating a thread for classics yesterday, only I kept giving up for some reason. Well, I do know. It's because I couldn't come up with a proper OP. So thanks for creating it! :hug:

I can't say I've grown up with classics but the past few years I've watched a few and now I seem to be getting into them a lot more, for some reason these days they interest me more than contemporary movies.

I haven't seen a lot of the stuff you've mentioned :( only Casablanca and Psycho. I love Psycho though. Casablanca I enjoyed as well but don't worship like everyone else. I love Hitchcock though. I've seen Vertigo, Rear Window and Dial M for Murder as well - are there any more I should watch? Yes, stuff like The Birds or North By Northwest or The Man Who Knew Too Much, are there any more? :)

Other favourites - His Girl Friday, The Philadelphia Story, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, All About Eve... can't remember. I'll probably remember them later today and go "Damn! Should have put that in." Oh and I'm going to get two Kubrick movies from a friend soon - she's burning them for me - I'm ridiculously excited. They're 2001: A Space Odyssey and Dr Strangelove, I think both are going to be awesome.
 
There was a classic movie thread on here a long time ago, so I thought I'd give it another try. So.....any of you fans of old movies? I've grown up on them so they have always been a part of my life. Some of my favorites are: Notorious, Psycho, Casablanca, Waterloo Bridge, To Kill a Mockingbird, Since You Went Away, The Best Years of Our Lives, and of course It Happened One Night.
