Chevy Impala or Malibu?

We're buying a new car. I realize that's an insane thing to do in this economy and yet, we are.

My significant other wants a "family" car. We only have one child, yet his current vehicle is a pickup that's quite cramped with three people in it, so we chose the Chrysler 300, the Ford Taurus, Impala and Malibu.

He ruled out the Taurus because he didn't like the chrome grill and I personally found the appearance to be too bland.

He ruled out the Chrysler 300 because it was too flashy and had too many "gizmos."

Now, we've seen both the Malibu and the Impala. We both like both equally.

What I'd like you to do is list anything you know about both of these cars that can possibly influence my opinion. This includes pros, cons, gas mileage, differences in appearance and anything else you'd think is important. If you own one, tell me what you love about it and what you hate about it. Etc.
Perhaps I should mention that he hates my Cobalt because it's of the 2-door variety and the back seat isn't easy enough to get into.
Vadim, Maybe you're not an American, but I am.

For the record, Buick won most reliable and that's made by the same company.

impala, it has more room. it's a larger family sedan, i'm not too aware of how the malibu is, except my mom has one and it is no where near how roomy an impala is.

but if you really do have a small family and you don't need extra space, i would choose a malibu.

if you have a small family and want extra space, get the impala.

Well, if if your only looking at American owned companies. Reconsider the Taurus as it is built by the only American car company not in bankruptcy and I got a 6 year 100,000 mile warranty for free.
Of the Chevy's The Malibu is a new design(car of the year), Impala is last year design(it will be changed next year).
Now that you mention it a Buick would work.

The newer malibu is roughly the same size interior as the impala. the bu is on a much newer and more modern platform. GM is systematicly moving the impala out of main stream in favor of the malibu. milage and reliabilty are about the same, both being average to above average depending on driving and maintence. I would go with malibu.
