Casino Royale

Definition of a forum from Answers.com: "A public meeting place for open discussion."

I do like the Bond films - I grew up in the Roger Moore era ("Live and Let Die" was the first one I saw) and have seen every single one at least once. So, contrary to your opinion, I actually am a Bond fan.

What I am not is a Daniel Craig fan (and no, it isn't the "he's got blonde hair!" thing - I just don't like the man or his acting style), nor am I a fan of the trailers I've seen of this film - trailers which I desperately wanted to like. What appears to have happened - and what the review I posted confirms - is that the Bond "magic" has been discarded in favour of grittiness, basically turning a classic formula ruined only by poor writing (Purvis & Wade) and gimmicky direction (Lee Tamahori) into a "Bourne" wannabe of sorts. Add to this the nonsensical aspect of having Judi Dench as M (the film is - contrary to what somebody posted earlier in this thread - a prequel to the series we know and, yes, love, because it shows how Bond became 007 and got his license to kill, so this obviously means it predates the storylines of the other films) which is ludicrous as this means Dench was M, then she went away for twenty or so films, then must have come back for some reason.

Why did I post this review? Because I read it this morning, not because I want this film to fail - why would I ever want such a thing to happen? Incidentally you seem to have missed / ignored my mention of the fact that I do not read the Times other than on a Sunday, so apart from the review I read this morning over my breakfast I have seen no other Times review and it most certainly wasn't the case that I was "ignoring the actual review from the same paper because its a good review of the film" as you rather presumptuously and incorrectly said.

Back to my opening sentence in this post: Forum - A public meeting place for open discussion. I was merely posting the review for discussion, not to damn a film none of us have seen yet.

Fair dues,Nasal.

Your previous posts did give a skewed image of yourself, nice to see you are a fellow Bond fan.

I agree that it is silly to have Dench in the film,he surely had to be replaced by another M.The continuity is awful.

That said,I disagree with you on CR. The change from 'classic' to 'darker' Bond HAD to happen.Even the Pierce BonRAB felt like the end of an era before the awful DAD.

I think CR will take elements of the classic and match it to the Bourne style(which I loved) yet twist it enough to give it freshness so as to not only be Bourne to the nth,but to also seem original, given the mix of classic and dark, with the humour mixed in(which Bourne does lack).

Then when dark becomes a cliche in a few years time,Bond will revrt to the classic style, then go back and forwarRAB as taste demanRAB.That is the Bond genius.Everytime it gets written off,it changes and reinvents itself and gives a giant FU to the critics..

I think Cosmo in the Times seems unable to take the film on its own merits.

well!
i saw it on friday night... and seeing it again this friday!
i thought it was brilliant
i always got annoyed with brosnan... far too cheesy
craig has got his head down and made it work
keep it up!
also, the track "know your name" by chris cornell is amazing... heard it on radio 2 the other day and it sounRAB fantastic as a song
therefore
without a doubt, film of the year, just surpassing mi3
10/10

After spending alot of time on anti Bond sites defending him since he was announced as the winner, to today when I saw it and he produced as I knew he would, your post has made me feel very happy...you have given him a chance and thanks for that. :)

I can't wait for it. Wow, I can't remember the last time I was excited about a James Bond film.

Anyone else amused with the amount of back pedalling being done by the so called critics though. Poor daniel Craig has spent the majority of this year being panned (can't drive, scared of guns etc) and we've all been led to believe how Casino Royale and Craig as Bond would be the death of the series. All of this of course long before we even saw the trailer.

Personally ever since I first saw the trailer I couldn't wait, Daniel Craig seems to me very similar to a young Connery, his brooding looks and furrowed brow I mean not that they look alike. this new Bond looks like he'd kill you just as soon as look at you, much like the early Connery BonRAB.

Good or bad I cannot wait for this film (much like the new Rocky film) and you can only hope that it lives up to the trailer (much like the new Rocky film)

You are so completely entitled to your view, no one likes everything everyone else likes, or the world would be boring, but I just thought it was interesting that this is actually the first really negative review I have seen of Daniel, and that is including papers, media, TV, etc.

So he must be doing something right. :)

'The Mother' is on terrestial TV this week, if you haven;t seen it, give it a look. He does actually play a builder :D but his acting, again is brilliant in it. He is a fine actor, but I guess not everyones cup of tea.

Got around to watching this last night, have to say I really liked it. After Goldeneye I thought Pierce Brosnan may have got the mix just right (As someone said earlier the best of Connery and Moore), but something went wrong there, every one after seemed to get progressivly worse.

The only things I didn't really like too much were the chase scenes (In Africa and the Airport). I felt they went on just a little too much and stretched believeabilty (Yes, I know it's Bond!!). I'd like to see Q return (But not John Cleese) albeit with maybe just the odd gadget, no overkill. I'd also like to see Danial Craig being just a little bit more suave, without losing the edge. Oh and Duran Duran doing the soundtrack :D I liked the graphics at the start, but would have liked a bit more of the classic theme.

Product placement spotting is something we have to live with, but it wasn't too bad. I thought the best one (Although it wasn't spotting) was the "".... you wear a Rolex" "No, Omega"" :)

Roll on the next one..

I laughed at the bit about the drink,

Bartender: "Shaken or stirred?"
Bond: "Do I look like I give a damn?"

I instantly thought of Catherine Tate and "Am I bovvered??"
:D

Thought it was a brilliant movie. The best Bond ever probably.

Daniel Craig is certainly the best Bond, and I thought Eva Green was one of the better Bond girls. Loved the banter between the two.

The story was very twisty-turny. The first time I've ever seen a Bond movie where I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I was also surprised at how emotionally powerful it was at times.

I agree with your comment - I saw CR on Saturday and thought it was excellent. I thought the intro was very good and enjoyed seeing a more ruthless portrayal of Bond. I think Pierce Brosnan had run his course and the franchise was becoming a bit CGI crazy. Good to see a gritty, back-to-basics Bond film. Looking forward to the next one.... :)
