Casino Royale

Excuse me, but I was only adding to what you said, I wasn't attacking you or in any way putting your view down

How does my post even start an argument with you!? I just wanted to agree with you and how this film was different...

saw the film last night and think it's the best 'story' in the series since OHMSS, equally low key too (no supervillian trying to takeover the world)

DC was good, but I'd have love to have seen Pierce do this film back in '95, just to see how it would have worked

surprisingly found myself liking the awful Bond tune over the credits, maybe the title sequence improved my perceived blandness of the song

clever decision to leave the Bond theme till the end, like the cameo's by Richard Branson and Michael G. Wilson

Eva Green was a great Bond girl, though Vesper's not in Tracy's class

all in all a solid 7 out of 10, not bad considering I wasn't a fan of DC.

Forgot to mention, that although it's not a typical Bond line, one of the lines uttered in this film has to be one of the best from any Bond film...

(Spoilers if you haven't seen it)

Bond: Vodka Martini
Barman: Shaken or stirred?
Bond: Do I look like I give a damn?

Priceless :D :D :D

The BBFC demanded cuts to make the film 12A, so the torture scene is not going to be as gritty as imagined, (alternative shots and some scenes taken out etc).

Still, Sony have released all the Bond films again in their uncut form so no doubt the DVD of the film will be released as an uncut 15 with the full torture scene intact.

Smacking of testicles with a rope/plank? Ouch...

Paddy :D

Saw CR last night and whilst as a cinema-goer I enjoyed the spectacle, as a Bond 'purist' I came away very disappointed.

The classic Bond elements are there; the Martini, the Aston Martin, the Bollinger, the Tuxedo, the girls, the exotic locales, the action, the crashes and the explosions, all very much in evidence. Still, this doesn't disguise the fact that Daniel Craig looks and moves like a builder, albeit a very, very toned one.

Yes this is a reboot, a back to basics approach on 007 but the last time this was tried with 1989's Licence To Kill the series stalled at the box office. Dalton's Bond was humourless, angry and wasn't afraid to get into a punch up but audiences didn't connect with the gritty realism of the new Bond and the result was a return to more familiar ground with 1995's Goldeneye. CR won't stall at the box office as the marketing hype around the film is considerable compared to the lacklustre effort afforded to Licence To Kill.

Dalton wasn't a bad Bond, but played the part in a rather brooding way, as if he was nursing a rather bad hangover all the way through. All the previous BonRAB have forged out a niche for themselves in the character's history. Sean Connery was the dark ladykiller, Moore was the suave Englishman with the puns and the gadgets, Brosnan was arguably a bit of both most of the time. What though, of Craig's Bond? This is a man who would look more comfortable mixing concrete than taking part in a game of poker.

Once the fuss has died down, I think in the cold light of day Casino Royale will emerge as a humourless, cheerless attempt to reinvent a character that we know all too well. 007 is a round hole and both Daniel Craig and Casino Royale are very, very square pegs.

I posted this review simply because I read it this morning (a full page review in the Culture magazine) and as I don't read the Times on days other than Sunday I hadn't seen any other reviews in there.

Apologies if I hurt your feelings by posting a negative review.

I'm reserving judgement until I see the film. Trailers can make any film look good or bad. Usually bad. It's selling this one as action above all else, which is typical...

Ain't It Cool has to be the least reliable movie site anywhere!

Excellent stuff, many thanks! :) 320kbps too :D

union_jak - Yup the choral music gives it an extra edge doesn't it. Are they real or is it electronic?

I saw it at a screening this week with a friend. I have to say it's a hell of a lot better than I was expecting. I wasn't holding out much hope but it was hugely enjoyable and is the best in the franchsie for quite some time. It would even work well as a stand alone movie. Very impressed and pleasantly suprised. I expect it's going to do very well when it's released in a few weeks time. lt's not really for kiRAB as, despite the humour, it's tone is far more mature than previous films. Brilliant work everyone and I was wrong, Daniel Craig - an actor who has previously left me unimpressed but open to be persuaded otherwise - makes a great Bond. 4/5

It was a decent enough movie - although I was expecting a little more given the rave reviews the critics have given it. the card game was, for me, a little bit slow. But not a bad effort mister Craig. And I thought Eva Green was great too - too bad the silly character goes and drowns herself at the end!
