Car tire on my Road King

Motorcycle tires are NOT made with softer compounds. See here:

A car tire is made to flex in the sidewall, a motocycle tire is not. And you are right, the contact patch on a car tire is huge, compared to a MT. I just got back from a long ride, where I was going thorugh the turns leaning farther and riding faster than normal, without consciously trying to. I was grinning like a fool, too, lol.
Long sweepers are a pleasure, and a hard stop on rippled pavement doesn't cause the back tire to chatter, like my D407 did.

Having said all this, a car tire is not for everybody. No reason to get personal , its not, drifter27011.
RandyDowdy, if you live close to Central Texas I'll let you try my bike.

Regards,

Good first post and follow up, thanks for the info. Now some off topic. So it takes what? 2 or 3 days to get to central Texas from any given Texas border. LMAO Just foolin' crossed Texas a couple times, seemed like it took a week. Thanks again.

Nate

Ps The up-skirt video was the best. Gave the most insight.

The side wall construction is very different between the two but so is the weight. If you turn a car tire on angle with the weight of a car on it regularly the side will will certainly fail. Do it with the weight of a motorcycle and it may last indefinitely. The lack of traction issue may be valid although I'm beginning to have my doubts about that too.

This all sounds intriguing, and man would it be nice to pay a hundred bucks for a tire change, but Iam skeptical as well, not sure I could be comftorable hitting the twistys at 8( plus miles an hour trusting a tire not designed for that particular application

I guess I may have to try this, what would it cost? 100.00 to experiment with it? All I know is I drug my floor board yesterday for the first time, and it felt solid as a rock! Nice long sweeping ramp off the interstate, and fresh blacktop!
I just can't imagine a car tire working like that,, not calling anyone a liar,, it just doesn't make sense to me....... and that third video did scare me, the way the tire lifts off in the center, I would like to see a similar video with a stock tire to compare,,,,

Welcome to the Darkside. I crossed over in April. Really like it and just about everyone who has crossed over says the same thing. Nope. Not going back to a MT.

I've got a thread on it here. Funny thing is I named the thread just about the same as you did.

Quadancer thinks he has found a CT for his 05 Heritage. That would be great news for a lot of people. Until he confirms it; only the 09 and later touring HD's and the wide tire Softail's can do this conversion. I changed the tire myself. It's no big deal and the Dyna Beads do work great.

I'm not sure one way or the other about car tires on bikes. Somehow it just doesn't seem OK. I do know this, you'll be hard pressed to find ANYONE around my area that would mount a car tire on a motorcycle rim. I also wonder just what the insurance company would do if you happened to be in an accident, and they found out you had a car tire on your motorcycle? Bet that would be a deal breaker! I'll stick with motorcycle tires. I'll never understand people buying $20,000 motorcycles, then trying to save a few bucks on tires, oil, and filters.

I'm going for it,sick of spending the money every 10,000 miles for a new rear tire.Could someone tell me the sizes for the 09 touring models.(Road King) Thanks

Bob,

Good to see somebody else that has done this. I will be in Arizona probably Tuesday, and I see you live in the Southwest. Might have a chance to meet and compare notes

Duracell,

The lack of traction? what lack of traction? in the car tire? The car tire has an insane amount of traction, so much that a MC tire doesn't even come close. I also had a hard time understanding that, as a matter of fact I didn't really understand it, until I TRIED IT.
