Car Audio: rear speakers don't work?

I have a 95' chrysler sebring, i don't know much about car audio systems but it has one speaker on each door (2 doors), two in the back and two small ones on the dash. I know the rear speakers are aftermarket because they have the price sticker on them still but I think everything else is stock including the deck. There is also an amp in the back but no subs. I don't have to much detail about the amp itself other than the brand name and serial #. I bought the car with this system in it so I haven't changed anything. It worked great until
a while ago I was driving and I heard a pop and my rear speakers stopped working. I checked for loose wires or anything out of the ordinary. Eventually I noticed when I start my car I get about 1-5 seconds of sound on the rear speakers and then it screeches and cuts out. All the front speakers work fine but they don't sound as good and I would like to have the rear ones working again without having to replace everything.
I was wondering if there is anything I can check or do myself instead of taking it in to be looked at (no shops in town)? Other people I asked about it guessed either wiring or the amp was the problem but I'm not sure.

well mostly from what i read i believe that you blew out the speakers when you hear a pop usually means you just blew them out. what you probably would have to do is replace them? they are not that expensive maybe for like 30 bucks you can get some decent ones?
