car audio, please help?

Hey,
I just got a car 99 Altima, and I want to get a sound system. As of right now it has a factory installed cd player/radio. My main goal is to able my iphone in the car, I tried buying an fm transmitter but the quality was horrible. I went to a car audio place, and he said he could install a hard wired fm transmitter for $90, or give me new radio for $169. But My question is, I am pretty good with electronics myself but have never really messed with car audio systems, is it possible to this myself. If I am at it, I may want to replace my whole system, what should I purchase?, I know that I need 4 speakers...a new radio, and also a subwoofer. I pretty much want a nice system, and would like to install it myself...any kind of suggestions would help. Thanks
 
if you really are good with electronics than I recommend you learn. you can save a lot of money this way, it's fun, addicting, and you will get FAR more for your money.

You did not mention price...,$$$

From experience, Alpine is very capable of your needs.......

I try not to be biased and all that sort of crap....
