car audio: how to tell if speaker wires are phased?

i replaced a speaker today in my car, but not sure if i have the wires on right,,i put the black wire on the small part of the speaker hook-up, and the yellow one on the large part of the speaker hook-up.

will it hurt it if they are?

i assum the black wire was ground minus, and thats why i put it on the small prong of the speaker.
