car amplifier wiring questions?

if i have 2 subs wired to 2 ohm and my sub outputs 2000 watts rms at 2 ohms does that mean that each sub is getting 1000 watts or is it getting 2000 watts. does it matter if they are wires in series or are wires parrallel. thanks
 
wiring plays a big role in your system. if you have 2 subs wired together in a series circuit, the resistance(ohms) are added.ie.2-4ohm subs equals a load of 8ohms to the amp. in contrast, if the same 2 subs are wired in a parallel circuit the load is split, ie. 2-4ohm subs would be a 2ohm load on the amp.
 
First a sub consumes power.

If you're feeding the subs 2000 RMS then each sub will get 1000 RMS.

Power is always split to subs wired together. It's only an equal split if the specs are the same.

Wired parallel will cut the ohms in half for equal subs. Series will sum the ohms.


How you load an amp determines the amount of power out.

There is a trade off though, the lower the impedance (ohms) the more power is pushed as well as higher distortion and more heat is generated. The excessive heat will shorten the life of the amp.

For best overall performance, it's far better to get a higher powered amp and load it with 4 ohms than a lower powered amp and force it to push more power with a lower impedance (2 or less ohms) load.
