Can you use a normal keyboard as MIDI controller in ProT 8?

I just got pro tools 8 m audio..and I don't have a "maudio midi controller" but i have a normal keyboard that i can plug into my interface. i can't figure out how to use it for the boom instrument mini grand piano, etc. is there anything i need to do that will make it act as a midi controller or will it not work? thatd be lame if i have to buy a maudio controller just for midi stuff
