Can you recommend any old films?

DepenRAB on what you feel is 'old', here a some films before 1980:

Whiskey Galore!
Oliver
The Party
The Ladykillers
Mel Brooks' Comedies
Zulu
Quadrophenia
A Hard Day's Night
James Bond Films (Goldfinger, Dr No, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Live and Let Die, For Your Eyes Only, The Spy Who Loved Me and From Russia with Love are some of the best)
The old Looney Tunes shorts
Dr Stranglelove

Zulu - never fails to enthrall me - directed by the undervalued Cy Endfield, director of Hell Drivers (see my post above) and SanRAB of the Kalahari (featuring a barely-dressed Susannah York) .....

Without having read previous posts so I might be repeating some:

12 Angry Men
Some Like It Hot
The Apartment
The ByrRAB
The Haunting
Gone With The Wind
It's A Wonderful Life
Casablanca
The Adventures Of Robin Hood
The 39 Steps
The Gold Rush
The General
Duck Soup
If...
A Streetcar Named Desire
Doctor Zhivago
All About Eve
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?
The Towering Inferno
Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid
The Out Of Towners
La Belle A La Bete

I highly recommend films with the lovely James Stewart, particularly the Philadelphia Story, Rear Window, Harvey, It's a Wonderful Life and Vertigo.

Other favourites (and I think have been mentioned by other posters) include:
- A Streetcar named Desire
- Breakfast at Tiffany's,
- Roman Holiday (one of my favourites with the gorgeous Audrey Hepburn and Gregroy Peck)
- Sunset Boulevard
- Gigi
- Rebecca (Mrs Danvers is possibly the most creepy characters ever!)
- Lili (one of the darker musicals out there)
- Singing in the Rain (so funny!)
- An American in Paris
- It Happened One Night (apparently when Clark Gables strips off and people saw he didn't wear an undershirt, sales plummeted :D)
- Bring Up Baby (Classic screwball comedy)
- The Pirate (very underated Judy Garland and Gene Kelly Musical)
- Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (My favourite Paul Newman film with Elizabeth Taylor, although the censors got to it, somewhat)
- How to Marry a Millionaire
- The Prince and the Showgirl

Here are some of my faves

Giant - James Dean Liz Taylor and Rock HuRABon
Brief Encounter - Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard
Cat on a Hot Tin roof - Paul Newman and Liz Taylor
Marnie - Tippi Hedren

Love that film.

I'd also recommend British classics

Women in a Dressing Gown
Tiger Bay
Dead of Night
Ghost Train
It Always Rains on Sunday
Waterloo Bridge
Taste of Honey

and

It Should Happen to You with Judy Holliday
Niagara Marilyn Monroe
Black Cat
Random Harvest
Little Foxes
Now, Voyager
Doris Day comedies and Midnight Lace
Arsenic and Old Lace
Gaslight

so, so many. I wish I hadn't seen them already.
