Can you recommend any old films?

I'm surprised to see that Sunset Boulevard hasn't been mentioned in this thread. A dark, acerbic classic that simultaneously tells you so much fascinating stuff about two of the great movie eras!

Zeigfeild girls
Madame X
Imitation of life.
The women...Joan Crawford..not the recent one.
Harvey.
House of wax
I'm sure i can think of a few more later.

Psycho (1960) - kinda obvious choice but I still think the final two shots of that film are the most chilling I've ever seen.

It's the shot of Norman Bate's face quickly replaced with his skull face as he smiles and then the shot of the car being pulled out of the swamp. Truly chilling end - the face of evil!

Cape Fear (1962) - a great 'stalker/man obsessed with revenge' thriller with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum. Hollywood has been making variations on that film for decades!

The Pink Panther (1963)

and

A Shot In The Dark (1964)

... classic comedies - Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers) trying to solve the cases and making a complete mess of it!

Some others I've remembered:

Gilda - Rita Hayworth

The Cat And The Canary - Bob Hope

Rebel Without A Cause - James Dean

School For Scoundrels - Terry Thomas

Dial 'M' For Murder.

High Society.

From Here To Eternity - Burt Lancaster
The Leopard
The Swimmer
Sweet Smell Of Success

Oh gosh where does one start. I see you are no averse to musicals, so might enjoy:

Pal Joey - with Frank Sinatra and Rita Hayward

Others I personally like and have in my collection are:

Mildred Pierce - Joan Crawford
Inn of Sixth Happiness
Against the Wind
Stormy Weather
Cabin in the Sky
Rebecca

are just a few

LoaRAB of my favourites here. But I'll have to add:

Legend of Hell House (1973) as scary-without-CGI
Most of the Road films with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby
To Kill A Mockingbird

In the Heat of the Night (1967) with Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger is one of my favourites, classic performances of a great story.

Great Expectations (with a young John Mills & John Guilgud)

Key Largo

The Night of the Hunter

The Producers (Gene Wilder, Zero Mostel)

If you are young(ish) and haven't seen these films, what utter joy awaits you!

You should check out Hitchcock's North By Northwest. A brilliant movie.

A StreetCar Named Desire is excellent too. Wonderful performance from Brando
