can someone tell me if the car headunit will support the apple ipod?

ive got a kenwood KDC-X890 or the KDC-MP832U not sure which one but both says they support ipod and ready but when i plug the ipod into the usb cable on the radio it just wont play ive tried the radio both in the pre out mode and the media mode moth both says N/A device can somebody help me and tell me what im doing wrong thanks
