can I just put sub woofers and no extra speakers in my '08 Jetta?

I have an 2008 Jetta VW and I want to put a system in it. Besides sub woofers, do I have to buy anything else to make it sound good or do I need the box that they go in, the extra speakers, and the other eletrical nonsense that goes with it?
